| Saw special needs bettafish in a fish store for the first time ever! Posted: 08 May 2019 05:49 AM PDT Over the weekend, my boyfriend (who is the real fish enthusiast in the relationship) and I went to an aquarium store that we had never been to before. They had lots of saltwater and freshwater tanks, and everything looked really healthy. They had a room that was full of different betta tanks. Some were in cups (only temporarily), some were in sororities, and some were in tanks with other fish (only ones they were compatible with, of course). Most of them seemed to be kind of "mixed" colorations and tail shapes. They clearly weren't the perfectly bred bettas I was used to seeing. Despite this, they all looked and acted very healthy, except for two. There was one that was in a tank with some small neon tetras, and he was hiding in a plant in the corner. One of his eyes was blind and severely swollen. I mean, the poor guy looked like a pop-eyed goldfish. There was another male in a larger tank with some females. The male was on its side floating at the top and breathing very heavily. At one point he started swimming around, and we could see that his back was curved in an unnatural way. This was extremely concerning, so my boyfriend and I asked an employee. She promptly told us that they rescue bettas from inexperienced breeders. They both came from a bad breeder that had inbred her bettas for several generations. She said that they weren't for sale because they needed extra special care. She said that most of their bettas were "pet store rejects" or "breeder rejects". It made me happy that these fish were being cared for. Most pet stores "discard" any that are not pleasing to look at. Any bettas with birth defects, no matter how minor, are thrown out. I'm glad that this store was giving these guys a second chance. Just thought you guys might like this story. :) Edit: A couple people asked for the store name and location, so I wanted to add it: CTE Aquatics located in Timonium, Maryland. They're open from Thursday until Sunday. [link] [comments] | ||
