Please help! Mini cycle?

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 03:58 PM PDT

I checked my ammonia today and it's at .5ppm I keep shrimp but they seem to be doing fine. I have no nitrites at the moment. I heard water changes stress shrimp out so how do I get rid of the ammonia? I have neocardinia. I also added two White Cloud Mountain minnows yesterday could that be the problem? I also know one shrimp got into the filter which is not a HOB maybe it died and is releasing ammonia? Please help

Are my parameters good for keeping and breeding shrimp?

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 02:05 PM PDT

I bought a 2.6 fluval spec and I'm currently cycling it and wanted to know if my parameters are good enough for shrimp to thrive in. Was thinking of getting Neocardina shrimp.

*Ph out of tap is 6.6-6.8 but the water in the tank is reading 7.6.

  • Gh is 3

  • Kh is probably 1 because the liquid never turned blue on the test

Lost 4 shrimp and other shrimp seem lethargic.

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:05 AM PDT

I've lost probably 4 shrimp over the last week and the rest seem a bit lethargic. Started with 11 shrimp in a 10 gallon with a mature AC20 on it. Nitrates were a bit high (>20 ppm) so I did a water change and overdosed prime to neutralize any ammonia, but apart from some occasional swimming I generally just see the shrimp lounging around. Nitrates are now at 15 and temperature is 75. gH is 10. I've had the shrimp for 2 or 3 weeks and they are the only inhabitants in the tank. When I saw the first death I saw the nitrates were a bit high so I did a 20% water change and dose prime to deal with any ammonia. Shrimp didn't react so I did another water change the next day being sure to change the water slowly. Not seeing any white bands around dead shrimp and I haven't been feeding at all since there's some detritus worm tunnels left over from before I got the shrimp when I had a fish die in the tank. Tank is moderately planted.

Also can any of these be used for babies or would I have to buy on specifically for babies?

Shrimp molt fail. Parameter issue? Help!

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:15 AM PDT

I have 25 red cherry shrimp in a 5 gallon. I got them a week and a half ago and have seen several successful molts since then. I did a water change yesterday and today I watched a shrimp struggle on its side for a while trying to molt and fail. It eventually died with the white stripe. This is the first one I've seen but i suspect there have been others. My tap water is extremely hard, 28 gh and 700 tds out of the tap so I use RO water with salty shrimp gh/kh remineralizer. Is it my gh/kh? Tds? Temperature? I turned the temp up to 80 to encourage them to breed but I also heard that might make them grow too fast and get stuck in their shell. Any help appreciated.

Temp: 80 GH: 9 KH: 2 TDS: 390 Ph 7.2
