Planted Aquarium - /r/plantedtank's Weekly Random Acts of Kindness!

/r/plantedtank's Weekly Random Acts of Kindness!

Posted: 19 Apr 2019 03:04 PM PDT

The Purpose:

We all perform tank maintenance. Sometimes, perfectly good plants end up in the trash because they simply outgrow their limited environment. Why not share these plants with another hobbyist? This monthly thread offers a space where buyers and traders can congregate, promote biodiversity, and make the world better.

Offering other aquarium-related items for sale or trade is also acceptable, but keep in mind this is a "Random Acts of Kindness" thread. All equipment and plant-life should be offered in either trade or for as cheap as is possible.

If you'd like to offer your homemade ferts, foods, or other equipment for retail sale, please visit the plantedtank.net's forums. Posting retail items for sale is not appropriate in this thread and those comments will be removed with a polite warning.

The Rules:

1. If you would like to post a "WTB" (want to buy) or ISO (in search of), you must also offer items for RAOK or trade in the same comment. "WTB/ISO" posts that do not offer anything in return will be removed to keep this thread in line with its intended purpose.

  1. Sellers: prices are encouraged to be as low as possible. These are plants you were willing to throw out, after all. Making a profit is not what this thread is about, and posts selling items will be removed. For clarification, "selling" is defined as asking for monetary compensation above and beyond the cost of shipping and packaging.

  2. Buyers: you will be responsible in covering the cost of shipping, at least. If a buyer is happy with the sale, please consider offering the seller more for their time spent packing and shipping.

  3. Please use a third-party payment organization like Paypal to conduct transactions if it can't be done in person. This ensures the security of the buyer.

  4. Always be wary of online scams. /r/PlantedTank, the mods, and Reddit hold no responsibility for your private transactions. You are liable. By participating in this thread, you agree to this.

  5. The transaction details should be conducted via PM as reasonably as possible. DO NOT POST ANY PERSONAL INFO. Posting even your own personal info will result in a warning, and then a ban.

  6. Sellers are welcome to use creativity and fun when offering their stuff. Pick a number, favourite colour, most unusual story, etc.

  7. Don't forget about /r/AquaSwap! Feel free to cross post between their sub and ours to maximize your advertising power.

Buyer/Seller Feedback:

Did you have a remarkable experience with a seller or a buyer? Please message the mods and let us know, whether your feedback be good or bad.

Shipping Instructions:

  • Please review this thread for some insight on how to properly ship plants.

Why can't I have 2 Amazon swords in my 10 gallon?

Posted: 19 Apr 2019 12:33 PM PDT

Crisp clean.

Algae-free bucephalandra at 200ish umols of PAR. High light levels can exaggerate issues, but high light alone doesn't cause algae, which is more tied to overall tank cleanliness, stable parameters and good plant health than anything else.

Canister filter swap out for chiller for peak of summer

Posted: 19 Apr 2019 10:17 PM PDT

Summer is coming up and the room gets up to 36 deg / 98 F

I have run a fan for the last few years on the 120ltr / 30 gal and it gets it down to about 28-29 deg with considerable evaporation and lots of topping up required. The current setup is moderately stocked, heavily planted tank of mostly anubias, carpet of riccia with good flow and aeration.

I have another tank that I cannot cool so easily so I usually take the fish out to the main tank during summer and put back again. I do not have space to do both a external canister filter and a chiller.

I was considering trying dispensing with the canister filter for 2-3 months during the peak of summer and using a chiller in the same space. I have never done before.

Wondering thoughts?

DIY root tabs: plenty of info on how to make them out there, but most do not tell you the spacing in a tank or the quantity per tank size. Also, gel cap size: how important?

Posted: 19 Apr 2019 09:22 PM PDT

As the title says. With the API root tabs it says to put 1 every 30 sq. inches (6 per 10 gallon) for me that worked out to 36 (60 gallon tank). How many of these DIY do you put in?

Gel cap size: most of the videos say to use 00 size. I bought 0 size. The 00 works out to about 753mg per capsule, while the 0 equals 500mg. Would mine still work? Do I need to put more in my tank since I'm using less per capsule?

My other question would be: how many of you do this and what results have you seen? I know there's more Cooper content in osmocote plus, but all the videos say it hasn't hurt their fish.

I just can't see paying $40 to buy 4 packs of the API or Seachem brands once a month, when the DIY ones can last for months at a fraction of the cost. They only come in 10 packs that I've seen.

Any helpful insight would be appreciated.

Looking into getting a CO2 system but not sure what I'll need

Posted: 19 Apr 2019 10:05 AM PDT

This is for a 37 gallon aquarium. At first I was going to do a DIY co2 system but after reading about it online it seems that it can be unstable/unreliable and that it can cause BBA and staghorn algae so I decided to use a pressurized co2 system instead. Then I though about using the Fluval co2 kit but the reviews for it are horrible. Then I saw the Pro-SE hit but apparently I need a canister filter for that so that's a no go as well. Is there another good kit out there I can buy which would include everything needed but the CO2 tank? If not, what do I need so I can buy it separately.
