Anyone tried to create a freshwater “food web”?

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:35 PM PDT

Back when I was keeping reef aquariums along with planted freshwater aquariums, I read a book called "Dynamic Aquaria".

This book talked about trying to duplicate the food web in a reef environment, from microscopic substrate crawlers all the way up...

It seems like the Walstad Method tanks are a step in the right direction, but stops short of recreating the whole microbiome.

Any of you taking that next step?

This branch has been in my empty tank for 1 day and already has this growing on it. What is it?
