Is my KH low because of plants?

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 11:56 PM PDT

Hello, so over the past few days I've got a couple of deaths in my neocaridina tank so I tested my water- Nitrates/nitrites are both 0, GH: 8°d, KH 1.5°d, pH: 6.8, Tds: 195, water T: 72°F(22°C). I don't dose CO2. I use RO water so the KH should be at around 4.

My tank is 15g (60L), substrate is just aquarium gravel, a little piece of driftwood, some root tabs under the plants, and some plants( some of them are fast growing). The tank has been set up for 3 months, before putting in shrimp, with snails as the only livestock as I was rarely at home at that time. I suspect the shrimp died because of pH fluctuations due to the low KH. I don't believe it was a molting issues as I am adding additional minerals to help with it and there were quite a few successful molts.

Do you think that the plants sucked up the KH? How should I address this issue other than making my water harder and/or doing more frequent/bigger water changes (I am adverse to doing more than 10%/week)? Or do you think that the problem lies somewhere else?

Thank you in advance.

Morbid question: Any way to preserve a dead shrimp in a jar?

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:45 PM PDT

I unfortunately had a very pretty blue bolts die on me :( and as morbid as this may seem to some, I'd like to try and preserve him and display him since he looked so pretty. Anyone have embalming experience?

Buffering substrate

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 04:15 PM PDT

Hey. So I was planning on building a tank that runs on active soil and was wondering if there are any tips you guys can provide so that I do not need to break down the tank. I saw someone post in another forum, forgot where, where they used a breeder tank and filled it with substrate so that it buffers the water. Is there another way that you guys recommend I do this that is also not so noticeable? Thank you.

What do you feed your shrimp/ snails? I used to feed Ken’s veggie sticks which they all loved and the added calcium really helped with their molts/ shells but now I’ve run out and can’t get any more (uk) I’m worried about them as my water has very little minerals and they don’t touch any veg

I've tried feeding them zucchini, carrots, spinach, kale but none of them seem too bothered. They love algae wafers/ veggie sticks tho and my population of cherries boomed. I'm about to run out however and I can't order any more of Ken's veggie sticks. Any recommendations on other supplementary calcium sources/ food?

Overfed my shrimp, think they'll be okay?

Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:11 PM PDT

I wanted to give the little guys a treat since I took a couple days off feeding them, so I dropped in half a cube of frozen brine shrimp instead of my normal 1/4th. My tank is only 5 gallons with 15 shrimp so it basically ended up all over everything. They all went nuts on it though and had it all demolished a few hours later and are still scavenging for more now. Think they'll be alright with that much food taken in at once?
