Help! My brother just left for basic which is around 13 weeks, and left his fish in my care, but I don't know the first thing about caring for what I assume is a regular goldfish.. ANY information will be a tremendous help

What's this red stuff on my fish tail?

How often do you change your tank water? Also percentages?

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 11:15 PM PDT

I've been changing mine once a week (usually about 40%) but after checking the pH before i changed this week I noticed that the pH was higher than it really should be. I wanted to just see what everyone's water change habits were like? There's a lot of conflicting information on the web so would be nice to hear from some long term hobbyists ❤️

Goldfish Tank Size

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 03:08 PM PDT

Can I request for (civil) views on stunting? I have a few aquariums and am looking to get into gold fish for my latest. I am considering a 55G (48Lx12Wx20H) setup for 3-4 Ryukins. I understand Ryukins can get to 8" (personally I am hoping for genetics that cap them at around 5-6").

I have been reading many articles with different views, but I do see many here and on /r/Aquariums who have a strong view against stunting.

At the same time I have read this article, and maybe from a biased point of view (again I would like to have ryukins that stop growing at 6" simply because they look more visually appealing to me at that size), it seems you can raise perfectly healthy (and happy?) fancies like that.

https://puregoldfish.com/tank-size/

But as I am in the research stage (and based on facts collected) I haven't committed to Ryukins yet. For me I prefer not to raise a monster fish and if we must settle that goldfish are monster fish in an all or nothing decision, I am open to finding another fish instead :)

so far my planned tank wise: 48Lx12Wx20H (~55G) tank; FX6 Canister + U4 Underwater (I understand the U4 positioned appropriately could create better circulation than airstones - and from my other tanks which over filter, I find airstones to be more or less aesthetic than practical); dual E300 heaters to maintain a constant 22c (73F)

Substrate: intend to use Seachem Onyx Fluorite; and hardscape with Seiryu Stone

Sorry! I know i posted the other day but my mom just fell in love with a pair on celestial eye goldfish but i've never raised any and i've been told they're fragile. Would anyone be able to give me pointers to keep these weird lads happy and healthy?

Dealing With City Water

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 01:46 PM PDT

So I recently moved and went from well water to city water. Of course this means I now have to dechlorinate on water changes. Today was my first change since the initial move in. I have noticed a little excess slime coat on several of my fish while doing this change. I'm using stress coat plus what is a dechlorinator and has aloe vera in it as well. Does anyone else notice an excess of slime coat build up when you are doing a water change with city water? If it's something else I'm open to suggestions.

Newbie trying to do a fish-in cycle. Not sure if it's working?

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 10:50 AM PDT

Based off of the advice I got in this post, I started up our first ever aquarium (already had the fancy) and have been waiting for the tank to cycle in order to add a companion for our first fish.

Here's the set up: 30 gallon tank, Fluval C4 HoB, air pump for rated for a 40 gallon tank.

Water has been roughly 72-76F, and feeding sinking pellets 2x daily. Doing roughly 50% water changes every evening as well.

However, doing the water tests I've seen very little change in the 8 days or so since setting up the tank. The first few days the Ammonia was a tad higher (~2ppm), but my tests have basically been pH: 7.5, ammonia 1ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 0ppm - every evening before the water change.

Nitrite test turns purple then pale blue?

Posted: 22 Apr 2019 02:57 AM PDT

Okay, I got a weird thing. I'm cycling a bunch of filters in a 7 gal tub with ammonia and stability. All of them were added at different times. I have an API saltwater mater test kit (best i can do, i literally cannot get a fresh water kit sent here). I've been testing the water in the tub to see if filter number 1 is done cycling. They are all sponge filter good for up 55gals plus one internal filter with carbon. There are no fish or inverts in the cycling filter tub. When i test the water, the nitrites test turns purple then pale blue (a 0 reading). I've not seen this before.

here's a pic: https://imgur.com/a/nHa1Arc

my test is in date. yes, i'm using it correctly. All the other tests seem to be working properly, i'm pretty sure of this cause i got a wee ammonia spike a little bit ago in one of my tanks. Kinda can't afford to get a new test kit right now. I've been doing daily water changes on both my tanks since idk what my nitrites are.
