Purchasing Goldfish

Hey everyone, I'm currently letting my tank cycle and am looking at various different options for where to buy my goldfish. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Donkey has developed some bubbles on his tailfins, does anyone know what they are or what causes them? He broke his tail a few weeks ago and I have been keeping the water clean. I've done a 50% water change, but does he need medication? If so, what kind? If I don't already have it, I'll go get it.

37 gallon tank, 1 comet, looking for mates

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 03:25 PM PDT

Hello there. So previously I had a much smaller ten gallon tank when I got my goldfish. Of course, with more research I found this intolerable and moved up. He's about two inches long at the moment, a little under a year old maybe?

Before, I had also had 4 Roseline Sharks (Denison Barbs) and I had the water heater at 78 degrees

Before I continue, I understand the goldfish is a temperate fish. I know it's not ideal to have higher temperatures for him. Either way, the tank actually formed a massive leak and I was forced to emergency vacate all the fish and moved up to the larger 37 gallon. My barbs didn't make the transition, but Jack (my goldfish) did and he's doing very well now.

My new tank has cycled successfully and I'm starting to think of what mates I want to add to my tank. I would like some suggestions! Keep in mind please that I'm more of a minimalist when it comes to fish keeping and appreciate Less Fish with More Personality than having Tons of different rather boring fish.

For example, I would've been absolutely fine with Jack being my centerpiece fish and maintaining just a single school of Denison Barbs.

To preemptively strike them off the list, I have no interest in: Snails Zebra Danios Rosy Barbs Tetras Shrimp Other goldfish White Clouds

I appreciate any help at all, and I would like to add a little more diversity to the tank, even if it's just one school of one species. And I know mixing warmer water fish in isn't ideal for Jack, but it should be known that he (seemingly) did absolutely amazingly in the ~6 or so months i was keeping him with the Roselines. He is not aggressive towards other fish so far and usually just spends his time looking at me when I'm near the tank, even with other fish in there haha.

Time for a Tankmate?

Posted: 15 Apr 2019 08:24 AM PDT

Hi all!

I have a 1.5 year old Oranda, and I was considering finding him a tankmate because I'm worried he may be lonely. With my first goldfish (2-3 years ago) this failed horribly due to my lack of experience. I didn't quarantine the second fish, nor did I make sure there was enough room in the tank for two fish. The new fish passed away from what I'm assuming was stress within 2 days and my established fish passed away a month later due to injury from a poorly designed filter... it was traumatic and led to a long hiatus from fish-keeping.

As it stands, my boy is in a 20 gallon, and I'm looking to upgrade to at least somewhere around 35-40 before introducing a new fish. My best idea so far is to cycle the new tank or use existing media from the current tank to jumpstart it, while keeping the current tank running as my "quarantine" zone for the incoming fish. When the new tank is established I'm hoping to source a goldfish (oranda, maybe ranchu?) from a breeder rather than a pet store. My current oranda had a nasty case of anchorworm that didn't become apparent until several weeks after we got him - I know that's the purpose of the quarantine tank but I want a good healthy start with as little surprises as possible.

Does any of this sound off? How did y'all introduce new tank mates and where did you find them? I want to expand my little fish family but absolutely won't if it jeopardizes Gizmo's health.
