Help! How can I explain to my dad that three goldfish will outgrow 20gallon tanks in 3 months?

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:07 PM PDT

I'm trying to get a bigger home for my three comet goldfish. I made a huge mistake by putting them in a 3 gallon bowl for a year. I know it is really bad and I was stupid. Now I want them to live their best life and hopefully they will regrow as they are probably stunted by now. I told my dad I need a bigger tank way larger than 20 gallon tank as I want to wait for my goldfish to grow big enough to be ready to go into the pond. I don't want them to be eaten by some koi in the pond. ( the pond is my friend's) So, I need a tank that will let my goldfish grow and be able to take care of themselves. My dad keeps insisting that those three goldfish won't outgrow the 20g in three months and they will be big enough to go into the pond. He told me to prove him wrong and show the research to him. Can you guys please help me?? I don't want my fish to suffer anymore

Move to larger tank now or after fish recovers?

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:25 PM PDT

I've been preparing to move my 4-year-old common to a larger tank. Unfortunately, he's not 100%. He hasn't eaten at all for the past week. I've been doing daily 50% water changes and water testing since he stopped eating. He seems a bit better now. Swimming around normally, but still not eating. My question is: should I move him to the larger tank now or wait until he is fully recovered? I am afraid that he may not survive the stress of moving to a new tank in his current condition. On the other hand, maybe he'll be happier in the larger tank. What do you all think?

Starting a goldfish pond

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:34 PM PDT

It's spring and i am planning to start a goldfish pond on a horse trough. Something like this: Behlen Country 50130028 Round Livestock End Tank, 2 by 2 by 4-Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BD8IXM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6fPOCbD97Q16H

What's the floating plant should i get so that the water get some shade? Will the goldfish eat them?

Scheduled power outage.

This week my electric company is going to be doing some work in my neighborhood that is going to result in my house not having any power for up to 4 hours. I have 3 small to medium size filters on my 56 gallon goldfish tank. What should I do? I'm really concerned about the bacteria in my filters dying and ruining everything?

Can I put goldfish with koi?

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:00 PM PDT

My friend has a pond of koi. Will it be ok to put my three goldfish in there? Is there any recommendations?

One more thing. Can I put my goldfish in a bin like a storage bin? Will it work?

Fish sucked into filter - help!

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:32 AM PDT

AKA Megalo the oranda and the no good, very bad day.

I came home about an hour ago to find that my oranda Megalo had somehow managed to get her tail and lower body wedged into the filter (a Ciano CF 80). At first I thought she was dead, but then I noticed her mouth moving and one fin flapping. I turned off the filter at the socket and my partner helped me to dismantle the filter around her, and we were soon able to free her. Her tail is a little limp, but not torn, and she has some light orange marks on her lower body that weren't previously there, but she's swimming around with her tank mate without any difficulty.

I don't feel able to put the filter back in the tank after this (putting gauze or netting around this kind of filter isn't a option; it's a really odd shape!) so my partner and I have gone out and bought a Fluval U2 filter. We've taken a bucketload of water out of the tank, and are now soaking the bits of the new filter in the bucket to encourage bacteria in the new filter.

Does anyone have any advice about how to prevent the tank's cycle from crashing, or things to watch out for in Megalo? We rescued her from a chain pet store with a badly ripped tail at the end of last year, and she's been doing so well until now! Tail's fully healed and she's started to grow at last...

Goldfish developing new habit

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:24 AM PDT

So I recently got a little common goldfish and he seems to be doing well. Lately though he's started to occasionally go to the surface, break the surface and then swim back down. Always in the same place. I have checked and re-checked his water conditions and everything is perfectly fine. Is this just something that they do? I'm new to fish keeping and don't want to miss a sign that something is wrong.

Thanks!
