Trying to start a new tank need advice

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 12:42 AM PDT

Hey guys so I had to put my Betta down last night and I'm really sad about it but I don't think I'm going to give up just yet. Currently I live in japan so I'll be getting most the stuff I need from amazon and I need a list of things that I should get to start a live freshwater tank and advice on how to maintain it would be very much appreciated! Side note : there are pet stores out here but everything is in kanji and there's a language barrier but it's where I'll be purchasing the fish and live plants I wanna make sure I get everything figured out before getting another fish so what happened to him doesn't happen to another fish of mine.

How important is a substrate made for plants?

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 02:22 PM PDT

I'm planning on upgrading my 20g to a 29g soon and I'm thinking of changing the substrate from fine gravel to black sand but I'm not 100% sure what sand I should get. I was thinking of getting the Fluorite Black Sand at first but now I'm thinking of just getting Imagitarium Black Sand and using root tabs to supplement the plants. I'll be having plants like Swords and Crypts in it. Are the nutrients in the Fluorite Sand necessary or will it suffice with just regular sand with root tabs?

What plants do you like to use for short tanks?

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Hi again, I'm back with some more newbie questions. A couple weeks ago, I stumbled across Foo the Flowerhorn's walstad tank videos and became enamored with the idea of building my own little low tech paradise.

Since then I've spent many many hours reading old forum posts and looking at tanks on this subreddit, and I bought and read Ecology of the Planted Aquarium. At this point I feel comfortable enough to cautiously attempt my first low tech planted tank.

I've ordered a 12 Gallon Long tank (the largest size I can do under my leasing agreement) and now I am pre-planning while I wait for it to get here. I've run into some challenges selecting my plants. I'm having trouble finding plants to use in the background of my tank. The 12 gallon long is only about 9 inches tall, with an inch of space removed for soil and an inch of space for the floaters I hope to have covering the surface, that only leaves 7 inches of space to work with for my background plants. I found some crypts that seem like they will stay small enough to work for background plants, but I would love some suggestions for plants that can grow in a low CO2 environment, but don't get too big.

Additional info the sidebar suggested I provide: Planned Substrate: Amazonia II Light: NICREW Classic LED Plus Filtration: Small cheap Dual sponge filter on amazon Planned Tank Stock: 6 Chili Rasboras and 5 Caridina shrimp and 2 rabbit snails

P.S. The manzanita branch I carefully selected for this project already arrived. Look at this beautiful stick! https://imgur.com/a/4zJu5Lj
