Help with favites and pavona coral.

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 08:13 PM PDT

I am new to this hobby. My first and currently only 2 corals are pavona and a favite. I've had them about a month. I also have 4 hermits a clown and a cleaner wrasse. Both corals were fine in the beginning. About 4 nights later the favite had his tentacles out and I hand fed him brine shrimp EVERY night. I noticed he was growing and everything. The pavona never ever had his tentacles out or everything about 1-1/2 weeks ago he started browning out. And got worse by the day. So after about 4 days of that I turned the lights up. Then I had a diatoms bloom at the same time just coming on. After the lights going up I ended up calling it S night early and didn't get to feed the favites. The next night I went to feed him and his tentacles weren't out. They have only been out once and only a little out about 4 or so days ago. Threes days after the lights going up the pavona appeared to be covering the frag plug a little more as if it grown a little my girlfriend agreed. At this point it didn't lose much color. Then a few days later it was back to the same old losing color and going all brown. The favites appears the same and to have nothing wrong. Today the pavona appears to have a few spots back as shown in the pictures I'm about to post. What do you guys suggest/tips? My params are:

Ammonia-0

Nitrite-0

Nitrate- Api test strips read 40 and reef master is reading 60. It read 40 last night after water change. I know my tap contains nitrates but I let it sit out for 3 days with 1200 gph powerhead. And it's usually 20 at most I don't have access to Rodi water. :/

KH-off the charts API test kit measures up to 214.8 ppm and I doubled that and still no results so I stopped there which I assume would be around 429.6 ppm and my guess is it's around 500-600 ppm. I don't know much about how high KH can effect and aquarium.

Calcium-500 ppm

Ph-8

Phosphate-0 ppm.

Temp-between 78-80 all day every day

All my results seem pretty good to me expect the nitrates and the KH. I don't know what the problem can be. I really appreciate anyone that took the time to read the long thread and reply to try and help me and I apologize for the long post. Thanks :)

Horrible photos, sorry.

Tuxedo Urchin Dying

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 03:04 PM PDT

I recently added a clean up crew to my recently cycled tank and everyone did great except for a purple tuxedo urchin. A dozen reef hermits, a dozen turbo snails, 2 fighting conchs, 2 smaller conchs (forget the name) and the tuxedo urchin were added on Sunday. I used drip acclimation for the whole crew, about 30-45mins. Everyone is doing great but this urchin, and I feel really bad because it's like he's suffering but not dying. He's sat in the same spot he was put into the tank, lost a ton of spikes and I see his little feet just barley sticking out in some places. It's been 2 days of him like that and he isn't dead just sitting there -I'm assuming- dying, I'm contemplating moving him to a different tank to see if it helps but I'm really not sure what's going on.

Tank parameters:

170g Red Sea test kit.

Ammonia 0ppm Nitrates <2 ppm Nitrites 0ppm Salinity 35 ppt Temperature 78F PH 8.2, (.1 - .2 drop at night, hoping the refugium will stabilize this eventually)

The trace elements should be pretty good however I haven't gotten a proper test kit yet (just ordered)

I use neomarine salt and the tank has a couple mushrooms, photosynthetic gorg, blue ridge coral, and some encrusting SPS that I can never remember the name of on a frag plug. All the coral look great, showing awesome polyp extension and happy.

Any ideas on what's wrong with this guy and any suggestions on what I should do? Could it be something I'm not testing like alk?

Wandering nerites

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 06:01 PM PDT

I have nerite snails in my tank and sump. Every couple of days I have to grab the stragglers and return them to the tank. Usually they wander no farther than the outside of the glass, but occasionally one goes on a journey. Today my son found one attached to the body panel of my car in the driveway. My tank is only ten feet or so from the car, but that little bastard must have crawled down to the floor, back up the wall, out the window, and to the car.

That's what I get for leaving the window open when it is raining, I guess.

What’s a small puffer fish

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 08:27 PM PDT

I'm looking for a puffer fish for a fish tank that's about 50 gallons I've looked around at porky pine puffers and such and most of them get about a foot long and that's a bit to big for my tank so if you have any suggestions for me that would be great thank you

What is growing on my montipora?

Posted: 26 Mar 2019 03:36 PM PDT

Pictures: https://imgur.com/a/0tVnUeu

It's a frag a got a month ago at a coral show. It had the receding tissue in the middle from the beginning but it has grown over time. The coral overall doesn't seem to be as happy as my other montipora with duller colors. I see slime come out of the Montipora pretty regularly. I thought it might be some filter feeder, but recently learned unwanted Vermetid snails may do the same. There is nothing that has come out of it, but it looks like a hole with something in it. Whatever it might be, it survived a Bayer dip.

What might this be and what should I do? I'm considering glueing it shut. I assume the Monti would eventually grow over it again?

Next to the monti is a chalice and I found this black dot on it recently which may or may not be related. It felt stiff when I touched it.
