After the planaria infestation I moved the few survivors into a back up 2.5 gal hospital tank. Had a couple of berried females. My last crystal shrimp carried her babies the whole way through before she gave up the ghost. Now they're big enough to ride snails!

I started my first aquarium Dec 31. Never had a tank my whole life but decide to start at 30. Ultimately I want a paludarium but I figured I'd start with the basics and see if I could keep a Walstad tank.

I read a post saying to begin a Walstad with fish, but I didn't want to waste the money especially if they didn't make it, so at 2.5 weeks in my cycle I got 5 ghost shrimp. I basically just chucked the poor guys in the water to see how they would do. I only cared about them insofar as they were to confirm a hospitable environment, and to provide water movement bc I don't have a filter/air stone. I didn't even have a heater at that point.

Wonderfully, they've all made it, and it's absolutely crazy how in love with them I am! They are so fascinating to watch I hardly even care about getting fish now. I would feel heartbroken if any of them passed. I'm caring for them the best I can and they all seem pretty happy.

I even made my friends help name them. Huge Jackman & Sebastian in one, and Detlef Shrimp, Krillamanjaro, and Michelle are in the other.

I've read a lot of posts here and this community is amazing, and the passion is contagious. So thanks for all the great info. I can't wait to get more shrimp!

Fish have been moved to their own home and the divider is down. The shrimp are active and picking over everything! Sorry for the dark picture, it's sunset time for these little guys.

First time Shrimp Tank owner. Advice please and Thank you

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:54 PM PST

Hello everyone,

So I did research all day and read a ton of stuff about starting a shrimp tank. Now I've never owned a fish tank before, so I've been reading up like crazy but I'm a bit overwhelmed with so much info. I bought a 5 gallon tank starter kit (https://www.petsmart.com/sale/fish/tanks-aquariums-and-nets/top-fin-imagine-aquarium-kit-38988.html?cgid=S300207) for a real good price.
I'm curious if I could get any advice on things like, getting another filter or pump (if some are too strong or have too large intake valves for the shrimp to be in danger) and other such info. Sorry for the general request, but man there's so much info I'm dizzy.
Plus it was a bit tricky finding shrimp-specific information, since it seems like most people use shrimp as an addition to a fish aquarium. From what I read, around 10 shrimp per gallon is appropriate correct? Also, how do I know if my LED light is good enough for life plants?

Thank you so much

TL:DR First time fish tank owner. Want a shrimp tank. Bought a 5 gallon starter kit. Got any advice in general?

Heyo all!

I'm using RO water remineralized to 10 GH 4-5KH.

I have snails in there but I've started to realize that their shells are breaking down.

Do any of you keep snails in your shrimp tank and if so how do you keep the shells good?

Appreciate the input

These are detritus worms correct? They aren't flat nor completely white.

Established shrimp tank with Cory fry?

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:25 PM PST

Can I put my Cory fry into my 5 gallon shrimp tank for the time being? Want to give them a smaller tank to grow out in and take away the possibility that predatory fish take em out. Is there any risk in this?

Suggestions on products to remineralize RO water.

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:06 PM PST

So I'm going to be investing in an RO system. My water is around 26 degrees of general hardness and it's causing molting issues and general deaths. What products would you recommend to put nutrients back into the water for a high tech planted shrimp only tank?

Any heater recommendations for a 5.5 gallon rcs tank?

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:06 AM PST

I see so many bad reviews on the heaters for smaller tanks..but I'm thinking user error (maybe). I wanted a honest opinion from fellow shrimp keepers on which brand/type you guys and gals would recommend.

Thanks
