Aquatic Snails What is the purpose of a snail's antenna? |
What is the purpose of a snail's antenna? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:15 PM PST What is the antenna for? Sources about it would also be appreciated (for some reason, in my experience, a simple google search does not provide much results about aquatic snail anatomy). Also, something I noticed is that when a snail comes out of its shell, the antennas comes out first while the snail "body" slowly follows (as opposed to the entire body coming out immediately). This makes me wonder if it uses its antenna for a sort of safety test. The idea is that if its antenna gets attacked, then it's too dangerous to come out. On the other hand, if its antenna does not get attacked, then it's safe to come out. If its antenna gets bitten off, it can grow back anyway. Is that really part of the antenna's purpose?
