Beginner water change question for a 5G planted tank.

Posted: 12 Oct 2021 01:16 AM PDT

To give a bit of info, I have a 5G medium planted tank, with 2 Nerites and about 8 neos and 40+ baby/juvenile neos in the tank. I live in a tropical climate, so I run a cooler fan for my tank, which also means evaporation is fast. What I've been doing so far for this tank's water change routine would be:

20% water change > water evaporates > top off with dechlorinated water > water evaporates > top off > water change

Because the evaporation is so fast, I have top off about 10% twice a week (excl. of water change itself). Is true that because I top off with dechlorinated water, the TDS and mineral will build up significantly right?

In order to prevent the build up of minerals and TDS, and to counter the evaporation, is it safer for me to do 2x 20% water change weekly? Instead of topping off, I do a small water change to avoid the build up of the minerals.

P.S. Could the minerals build up or TDS be the reason why my neos aren't breeding? The babies were from a berried one that I bought that gave birth in this tank. The babies are growing up fine, I feed them shrimp cuisine, recently dosing bacterAE, but just don't have luck with any berries, it's been about 3 months :(

Appreciate anyone who reads this chunk of text!

Posted: 12 Oct 2021 12:23 AM PDT

Do i need to add a calcium source for my shrimp? I'm going to be building an ecosphere and i'm not sure how i would give it calcium also what type of shrimp would be best for not giving it anything and letting it eat the algae that grows naturally? what shrimp would be best can i use cherry shrimp?

Maintaining low TDS when re-mineralizing water?

Posted: 11 Oct 2021 05:31 PM PDT

I started up a new tank about a month ago that recently finished cycling, and I'm looking to get the conditions right to house caridinas (blue bolts) for the first time. Everything I've read says I should aim to have around 120-150 TDS for them. However I'm having trouble getting below even 250 TDS once I get everything else (pH, kH, gH) right.

I'm using either my tap water (very clean, ~30 TDS) or distilled water. I'm then adding alkaline buffer and acid buffer to get to 2-3 kH and around 6.6-6.8 pH. Finally finishing it off with Bee Salt to get the gH to 5-6. Also using Prime on the tap water. I'm trying to minimize how much of each I use to get the water to the proper conditions. But when I get it right I end up with 250 TDS.

Any advice or suggestions would be awesome!
