How long can a tank last after cycling before adding coral or fish?

Posted: 14 Oct 2021 08:34 PM PDT

I decided to start my first saltwater tank after only keeping cichlid tanks in the past. I used the bottled ammonia and bacteria method to cycle through it, but I screwed up the dosage and ended up with 8+ppm of ammonia.

I let it cycle and it took about 2 and a half months to filter through the cycle and I finally ended up with 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite. It has hit the point where it cycles through 2ppm ammonia in less than 24hrs.

I'm told that all I need to do is do a 50% water change and add livestock. However money currently tight at the moment and I'd have to wait to pay a few things off before I actually buy some coral and just wanted to know if it's safe to leave the tank as is for about 2-3weeks. Also does it matter if I do a water change now or should I do it just before I buy stock? Thanks!

Feed her or she good?

Very torn between these two tanks. On one hand the 50 gal is bigger and fits the stand better but on the other the 40 gal has almost 3” more display height. Doing mixed with SPS. Pros and Cons?

RO/DI Filter Recommendations - What do I need?

Posted: 14 Oct 2021 01:30 PM PDT

Y'all convinced me! Haha.

I need to get a RO/DI filter. I can't really find much to help me decide what I personally need, so I'm hoping I can get some more help here.

The city I'm moving to has extremely hard water. Over 15 kh & gh. According to my friend, she has to descale her small appliances and faucets every two or three months. So... a lot to filter out in that department.

According to the publicly available water report, the average chloramine is just under 3ppm. Copper also averages .5 ppm.

I have no idea what the TDS is right now. Looking to get it soon.

I'd like to also get drinking water from this filter. Would I need to be concerned about that taking away too much water pressure from the DI resin if I T-ed off right after the RO part?

What I'm currently looking at is a BRS 5 stage, but I'm also considering a 7 stage mostly for the benefit of having seperate resin beds. Could I get away with a 4 stage?

I'm thinking this should cost around $300. $200 being low end, and $500 being high end. But I have no real context, so if that's way off please tell!

I've also seen spectrapure heavily recommended, and no shortage of people saying the ones from places like costco and home depot are fine.
