What is this blob of red algae in my soil/sand cap substrate? What should I do about it?

My anubias flowered 3x omg

Why is my anubias nana looking like that?

2 weeks part (before on left, after on right) - for folks dealing with diatoms in new tanks, often they disappear on their own as quickly as they appear, so don't fret.

what is this nasty growth all over my spider wood? I know bio film is common on new wood, but this has been in the tank for months and it won’t go away

Substrate in a high-tech tank - every option has someone shitting on it online?

Posted: 14 Oct 2021 10:25 PM PDT

So I'm setting up a high-tech tank - which makes most beginner videos pretty useless to me as they all assume low-tech, but I have some money to burn so I'm burning it to hopefully save on time and effort later which is where I'm usually in the red. In terms of what I'm after that has led to this 'nothing is good' selection:

  • A decent carpet (planning dry start method to kick this along)
  • Kuhli loaches as the most substrate-demanding fish, some otos as well though
  • At least 5 years where I don't need to replace the aquascape (preferably no real time limit)

In terms of substrates and what Señor Google has told me:

  • Sand is a no-go for planting (still planning on some black sand in non-planted decorative areas for the kuhli loaches to bury themselves in without getting hurt)
  • Gravel is similarly a no, plus it's bad for the kuhlis
  • Dirt is muddy as hell, and has to be ripped out and replaced after 1-2 years as it's been depleted
  • ADA Aquasoil also has to be ripped out and replaced after 1-2 years, and digging fish will fuck it up
  • Fluval Stratum might last 3 years, but needs root tabs anyway, is too light to hold down a carpet, and digging fish will fuck it up
  • Eco-complete lasts forever with root tabs, but won't sort out a DSM carpet, and even with root tabs and dosing plants won't do as well as in aquasoil/stratum

So far I'm leaning towards black sand decoration, eco-complete for the carpeted areas, misting with liquid fertiliser dosed water during the DSM with root tabs, and then after it's set up dosing with root tabs and liquid ferts.

I guess what I'm wondering is whether that is the go with aquasoils after their end-of-life anyway? Is the difference just that eco-complete needs more root tabs and liquid ferts earlier? In which case I'd just go with eco-complete to get the balance from the start.

Weeping Moss more successful than Java Moss?

Posted: 15 Oct 2021 02:42 AM PDT

Hello,

I recently set up a new fish tank with Java moss and weeping Moss glued to bogwood. The weeping Moss is growing really well, but the Java moss looks very dark green and has much weaker growth. I was wondering, is this a common experience, or is there a chance the Java moss is actually something else?

When I look at pictures of Java moss on the internet, it often has a mid green color and I expected the Java moss to grow much better / faster than weeping moss. My tank is 18" deep and I have a finnex planted led light.

Thanks for your help!

It is scientific fact, that no matter how planted your tank is, bettas love betta beds (the one artificial plant I know I have to get when I do a betta tank)

is boiling wood okay or not ?

Posted: 15 Oct 2021 02:33 AM PDT

I have a piece of wood that is making my water yellowish brown , i know it's good for the tank overall but i like the look of clean white water. Now i heard that boiling the wood would help but i read that some people don't recommend it because the wood would die and rot ? But isn't the wood already dead ?
