My best friend passed away. Help figuring out why?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 04:07 PM PDT

I had gotten a goldfish that was retiring from a university lab program a little under a year ago. When I got him, I was told he was about 4 years old. My friend and I put so much love and time and care into this fish, he meant the world to us. Unfortunately, when I moved the tank into my parents' house they got the idea he needed a friend. They didn't listen to me when I told them the tank wasn't big enough for another fish and got a small fish from the petstore. They didn't quarantine the new fish, they plopped him in the tank while I was out to "surprise me". After about a week, my original goldfish developed what I thought was ich. White spots, lethargy, all the symptoms. I went to my local aquarium store, they suggested I do a 30% water change, turn up the heat to 81°F, add a teaspoon of aquarium salt, and Nox-Ich at half dose since I have plants and snails in the tank as well. After 3 days, both fish looked like they were doing really well! My og boy was less lethargic and the spots started disappearing and the new fish never had any spots or lethargy in the first place, but he looked like he was doing well. Yesterday morning when I got up to feed them, I noticed my boy was active, but a little strange. He now had black patches around his gills and some other places on his body. I added more Nox-Ich thinking maybe it was coming back and a little more couldn't hurt. An hour later, I walk by the tank and he's gone. The new fish is completely fine. This was so incredibly distressing for me and I really need to know, what happened? How did I lose my best friend? Is this new fish in danger too? He also looked like he had some odd dark patches yesterday but today they've nearly entirely gone away.

Sorry for such a long post, but I really need your help. I'm so distraught losing my friend and I just need to know what happened when it looked like he was doing so well. Thank you for any help you can give.

Future Goldfish Endeavors

Howdy! I'm new to keeping goldfish properly and want to ask a question or two before I get into it.

Just to preface - I will not be getting any goldfish for another 3-4, maybe upwards of 5 years. I'm at capacity with my current fish (a lovely baby Tiger Oscar) and a fish I have planned for the near future.

I've fallen head over heels with Ranchu goldfish and would love to keep them! I mainly have one question of the utmost importance which is - would 55 gallons work for 2 ranchus? I would, of course, have at least 2 filters on the tank and it would be heavily planted to help with the bioload.

I also know that goldfish enjoy cooler waters, but I'm not entirely sure if I should have a heater in there solely because of the house temperature. During the day, the house is typically set to 72°F(~22°C) or 68°F(20°C), and the water would wind up cooler than that. At night, the AC/heat does off and the house can get down to 60°F(~16°C). Typically, though, it stays closer to 68°F at might. Would it be worth it to have a heater, albeit set to a low temperature as opposed to a tropical one?

Thanks in advance!

Air bubbles?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 08:03 PM PDT

I have 4.5 gallon tank a betta and a small pluco catfish of some type that the fish store guy said would be ok. The tank has been freshly cleaned and 30% of the water was cycled 2 days ago I have a water heater on the way tomorrow but that doesn't seem like the answer. The bubbles have been there all day and there seems to be more of them, any clue why and are they harmful? And yes in case you couldn't tell I don't know a lot about keeping fish. Thanks for the help!

Help! Egg is suddenly lethargic , scales look slightly raised but she’s not bloated.

The fish has had this weird whitish spot on his/her head for quite some time. It doesn't seem to affect his/her lifestyle. Is this weird coloration or do you guys think it's a disease?

How to safely give away a goldfish? UK

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:46 AM PDT

Hi people, I have a white Oranda with a lovely big fantail but unfortunately I feel he has outgrown my 45 litre tank, (he's my only fish). How can I go about giving him away to a safe home with a larger tank? I'm from Notts in the UK and was hoping to offer him for free on gumtree but they seem to have stopped the free advertising of fish.....

Test kit recommendations? Based in the UK if that helps, but obviously can order online. Currently using strips but is there a better option?
