Always take what the pet store tells you with a grain of salt. Posted: 14 Oct 2021 02:41 PM PDT I had my tank cylcing for around 2 months, I wanted my axies tank to be PERFECT. My tank was finally almost done, there was only around .1-.2 PPM of nitrite, the pet store employee told me that a 30% water change would get rid of that, my gut told me that I should just wait a little longer and have the nitrites go down naturally, but I decided to listen to him and did a 30% water change. I forgot to test the water after the water change and got the Axolotl and put him in the tank. All went somewhat well for the first week, I noticed that the nitrite wouldn't go down. I decided to test my water yesterday and the nitrites where at 2 PPM and the nitrates where at 85 PPM, my Axolotl is somehow alive and I am doing everything possible to keep him alive. I will most likely tub him today until my tank returns to normal. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Oct 2021 05:06 AM PDT My tanks ammonia levels spiked and I'm not sure what to do. I did a 40% water change last night and didn't really help. The rest of the parameters are good. Temp is 63, ph is 7.6, and nitrate and nitrite are both zero. As of right now my axolotl is acting normal, but I'm terrified if not getting the ammonia under control and hurting her. Posted: 15 Oct 2021 05:02 AM PDT Hi, So a while ago I made a post talking about my poor water quality as a result of not cycling the tank correctly (I'm new to owning aquatic animals.) After speaking with some community members, I have tubbed him. The tub is a rather decent size, maybe the size of two shoes boxes side by side. I also got him some Indian almond leaves. He has some shaded area and one of his favourite plants to climb on. He HATES being taken out of his tub with a passion. I cannot pick him up with my hands as I can't catch him and even when I finally do, I have his slime coat all over my hands and it feels so bad and wrong (makes me cry man, I can't bring myself to do it again.) As a result I use a net or pour him along with the water into another tub (sometimes not possible if I need to change all the water, so I use the net instead.) He gets daily water changes, and then maybe once a week a full water change ( decided on once a week now, trying to avoid stressing him out more.) As soon as I put him in his tub, he started to shed his slime coat again. Temperature could be better, currently fluctuating between 18-22 degrees C. (rarely reaches 22 but it has.) Ph has been fluctuating a bit, but I've been doing my best to keep it as level as I can. Its hard for me to monitor the temp and ph sometimes while I'm working all day and no one else is home. Even when I am home I know fluctuating ph can stress them, trying to keep it between 7 and 6.8 as it dips to 6.6 often. He still eats like an absolute monster, when I put the tongs in there after he's had his pellet he goes for the tongs and tries to take them from me haha. Currently eating between 2-4 pellets every 2 or so days. Thanks everyone for your previous advice. I would love any further advice on how to take care of him while he is in his tub. I am thinking of freezing some of his tub water into ice cubes to help cool it down when it gets warm. Thoughts? [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Oct 2021 04:47 AM PDT I intended for my lotls to be stationary pets for a considerable amount of time, but life doesn't always play out that way and I'm in search of a new home. While I prepare to move, what should I be aware of? I'm not so much worried about moving my axolotls themselves as Willow was shipped to me as a baby and Pearl has been transported in the car. They will be the left until the very end to move and the commute is roughly 30 minutes. My concern is the tank. It was a b**** to cycle my 50 gallon and the relief of it being steady and safe for them has been blissful. I know it's not the water that is cycled, and instead the filter, but this will definitely disrupt something…right? Do I leave some water in, or drain it completely? My dad has a trailer that I'll attach to my jeep so as long as we can carry the tank down 3 flights of stairs, I'd like to keep some water in and then secure the tank so it won't tip over. I've absorbed so much information about being an axie parent through ya'll. I know it's not ideal to move them but please know it is necessary. I'm open to any kind and honest advice. Thank you!! Please Help Me Figure This Out Posted: 14 Oct 2021 07:33 PM PDT Ok, so I am thinking of adopting an Axolotl and I want to make sure I do everything right as I have never owned a fish/underwater animal before. I know what to feed it, about the hides, water temp, lights, etc, but I was wondering a couple of things which I would be grateful if someone were to tell me how to do these certain things, or if I shouldn't do it entirely. Thanks!
Thanks for reading my questions, and if you could answer them I would be grateful. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Oct 2021 10:51 PM PDT Can I see your aquarium fan setups if you don't have a chiller? I don't understand how a fan is supposed to be pointed at the water if the tank has a lid on it. Axie tanks have lids so the axie doesn't jump out, but then how do you put a fan above it if the lid is blocking it? I never truly understood how thats supposed to work. [link] [comments]
