Are these gills forward a sign of stress??

ammonia spike

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 05:39 AM PDT

hello,

I currently have an ammonia spike of 4 and my tank is very cloudy.

Size: 20gal

Ph: 7 (I have been struggling to keep it at a suitable level)

One axolotl

I had this tank cycled before I got him in, but I think the cycle has crashed. That or, I tried and the cycle wasn't fully established. I used quick start and let it sit in the tank for around three weeks before going to the fish shop and having my perimeters tested. They said it was good to go. I've had Toothless (axolotl) for a couple weeks now, and at first it was totally fine. Very recently that has changed. I tried doing regular water changes but that doesn't seem to have had much effect. The people at the fish shop (who are breeders, one has been for 15 years so she knows her stuff), said to stop doing constant changes or it would not allow the tank to establish. I tubbed toothless for a little while but he hated it, little guy wouldn't eat and was never sitting still.

I am using prime to help keep the toxicity down

Toothless is still eating in the tank and showing no signs of stress aside from spending more time than usual in the corner, no curled tail or gills. He still swims around, but yesterday the tank went cloudy and now he sits in one corner, and then occasionally swims to the other. The could be just because he has gotten used to his tank and no longer feels the need to explore so much, but considering the situation, this could be the total opposite as well.

I am inexperienced in keeping aquatic pets and the past week has been so exhausting. I've been staying up late with him, trying to fix this. I've done heaps of research and spent over a grand on equipment, chemicals and general tank stuff. I really love Toothless, he makes me so happy but recently I have been very stressed about his safety. Lots of sources contradict one another and the breeder I've been speaking to says different things as well. I no longer know what the correct thing to do is and i'm worried for my little guy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, sorry for the long post.

TLDR: so much contradicting advice, im stressed af how do I keep the ammonia levels down I have tried everything!

DIY ledges?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:17 AM PDT

I just got a 55 gallon to upgrade my lotl to, and I really want to make some ledges and things to utilize the vertical space. Has anyone done this in their tanks? What did you use? TIA!

Cycling Questions

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 07:56 AM PDT

Can someone (nicely) explain why my rationale is wrong here.

I took my last post down after being attacked.

There's no need to state "obviously you should have cycled first".

  1. If something is "obvious" then you don't need to state it.

  2. It is what it is. This is the situation I'm in now. Berating me for it isn't helping my Axolotls.

I had trouble getting my tank set up. It took much longer than expected. I went ahead got my boys at a show because I wanted to get them from a specific breeder who was going to be in town for that show.

They are in a tub that is too small. I do 100% water changes daily. But the tub does not have filtration or agitation.

My tank is set up, but not cycled.

How is it NOT a better situation to go ahead and put them in the tank while it cycles and still do 100% water changes?

At least this way, they have the space they need, the agitation, the filtration etc…

I know that ammonia will hurt them. But at the end of the day, their tub has ammonia. That's why I change the water.

How would that be any different in the new tank?

I know there are two schools of thought about water changes while cycling. I will go ahead and say that after research, I believe it is fine to do water changes while cycling.

I'm looking for actual education here. Not for someone to just tell me what to do. That doesn't help me in the future. This should be a place to teach people. Please help me understand the process.

Theoretical question on the mistreatment of axolotls

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:41 AM PDT

Hello I just have a theoretical scenario and I would like to know what's being done wrong so I decided to ask the experts. So let's say we have two axolotls in a very small bowl filled with an unknown kind of water, currently there is water being poured on top of them for the purpose have making them move around and forcing them to change color. I would just like to know what exactly is being done incorrectly in this scenario.

I Just Got My New Axolotl But I Have a Question

When I first got it it was smaller and after feeding it, the next day it got slightly larger. Is that normal?

What do I do with Clementine if I'm going on holiday?

Surrendering/Rehoming (Pet only)

Unfortunately I can't properly take care of my axie anymore-between school, work, and my mental health. Due to this his health is not 100%, but it is not what it has been in the past. (It's at like a 75%) He's a male albino mel, 9 months, and roughly 6 inches. I'll be sending pellets along with him. As far as the tank and accessories, I'll be selling those separately. I'm located in the Houston TX area, meet up is preferable. I'd like for him to be happy, I just do not see him being happy with me for the long run. I hope y'all understand.
