Just got this cute axolotl yesterday, noticed his gills are very curved forward, apparently its a sign of strong current or bad water parameters, checked and everything is fine, could it be that his gills are just made this way or maybe hes stressed because hes in a new environment?

It kind of blew my mind today when I found out that metamorphosis can be induced in Axolotls by exposing them to thyroid hormones. Pretty wild. Here's a video that sums it up pretty well and gives other interesting facts on Axolotls.

I'm about to become a foster mumma

Posted: 08 Oct 2021 08:26 AM PDT

Hello! I'm brand new here. I have two well looked after fish tanks, with many happy fish that are doing exceptionally well, but I'm still quite new to these aquatic hobbies having only done this for 2 years. My friend who has been into fish for a lot longer than me, and has spent years and thousands of dollars on her tanks and stock, is rescuing ~100 axolotl babies tomorrow. They hatched today. She needs me to help her foster these babies and look after them. Right now we're running around getting extra tanks and I'm doing a lot of reading. She has experience with axolotls but I don't think she's an expert just yet. I was hoping you could please give me some advice. What to do, what not to do. Anything that's important that I could have missed in my reading. Any really good links for (hopefully) raising many little babies. I understand that as a beginner I'm going to make mistakes but I really want to minimise those because we have lives on the line here, and I can't stand the thought that one would die due to my ignorance. I'm working on getting some daphnia and other food for them, I have an ok understanding of what they need and when in that regard. I've got a bunch of YouTube videos to watch, and a few more links to read, but I feel like I don't have that much time to really get my head around everything. I know a little bit, but don't worry about offending me and telling me something I may already know. There's no ego here whatsoever. One more thing what's the average expected survival rate to about juvenile age? Thank you in advance.

While waiting…

Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:09 PM PDT

While I'm waiting on my tank to cycle, which of the following should I or should I not be doing? Anything I'm missing? There's so much bad information out there!

• 100% water change daily in my tub • Removing my Axolotls for water change • Rinsing hides and other objects daily

Is it more harmful to change only about 75% of my tub water and leave the Axolotls alone, or more harmful to move them in and out of the tub daily for complete water changes?

I found these two spots on my axie. I’m not sure if it’s fungus or not, so please let me know what you think. His water parameters are good, no traces of anything, and he’s been eating and acting normally. Any help would be great

Hello! I have a 3 inch baby axolotl, I've been feeding bloodworms for awhile now (I know their not a good staple diet, and I would like to change that.. ) but I need to know if it would be better to buy red wriggler worms for my axie or if it would be best to go straight into cut-up earthworms (cut to the size of the width between it's eyes) Do most axolotls like the taste of the red wrigglers and if that would be the better option, how many do they eat a day? = • _ • =

Why does my Axolotl look so sick and pale?! I worked my ass off to get the parameters perfect, his tank is cycled and I always make sure the temperature isn't too high. 1st pic is him now 2nd pic is him normally. I'm worried he looks so bad :(
