How does everyone keep their pond from freezing over during winter? I’m in NY and our winters are pretty cold. We have an aerator but looking for additional options/recommendations. TIA!

If any Koi keepers have any feedback it would be much appreciated.

Winter Feeding In Mild Climate?

Posted: 07 Oct 2021 03:56 PM PDT

I live in a fairly mild climate, and our pond hasn't frozen in the 3 years we've had it. The coldest we get is usually in the low 30's overnight. We can have an occasional 70 degree day in January, but the water temp definitely drops some, usually into the 50's at its coldest. Wondering what the guideline is for winter feeding when we have fairly mild winters? Should I just not feed them during our "cold snaps" (or at least what qualifies as a cold snap here) and give them a little when it's warmer and they're more active?

Recently bought a house, started emptying algae filled pond to spot 2 possibly more koi.

Hi all, just rushed here because of our little surprise.

Always wanted koi but never this way haha. So the pond has no pump, just a few lillies, past owner passed away in March so yeah gonna see if I can feed them something as I think nothing has been given to them since.

They look small so was thinking of transferring to an aquarium for now as we have little kids and we don't want a pond in the ground for now.

Question 1. Do I really need a air pump and heater, considering they have done well in such horrible conditions for a while?

Question 2. We are focusing on house renovation but since I'm a sucker for these guys I wana keep em, any tips on keeping it low cost stress free. I have kept fish before so appreciate real costs but want a temporary arrangement for now to keep these guys alive and well.
