I want to start a shrimp tank but have a few questions

Posted: 16 Jun 2021 08:22 PM PDT

I wish to start a 5 gallon cherry shrimp tank, and my very first question is how many shrimp can I have in a 5 gallon tank? If they overpopulate I'll give some to my goldfish as a supplement. Second question is what should I feed them? Third question is how do I know if the filter flow is too strong and how could I slow it if it is? Last question (I promise), how do I know my shrimps are happy and healthy? Thank you for any help :)

Anyone know what this is? Popped up recently. Only on one shrimp and I’ve isolated it. Looks like a yellowish fuzz.

Are ghost shrimp more aggressive than neocaridina?

Posted: 16 Jun 2021 08:47 PM PDT

I do not keep ghost shrimp but have heard that they can be aggressive, potentially harassing or killing other shrimp. Is this true, or is it more likely that these stories come from people who were sold mislabeled whisker shrimp or another species?

Question about breeding and geen pool.

Posted: 16 Jun 2021 11:58 PM PDT

I have had shrimp since February this year. They are in my 20gallo. Neon tetra tank and has only recently had babies. I have 9 adults were 3 are male.

I am wondering if i put them in a 12gallon tank alone and they breed, how long will it take for inbreeding to set in? Should i add shrimp from someone else? Can they just keep breeding with an isolated group?

Setting up my first shrimp tank

Posted: 16 Jun 2021 04:15 PM PDT

So I've decided to setup a small office shrimp tank, maybe 5-10 gallons. I would like to have a lot of plants and I think I've decided on blue velvet shrimp. I was initially thinking crystal shrimp but I think they are too difficult for my first tank.

I have a few questions:

1) I think a light substrate would look the best for blue velvet but most of them are dark. I've also read that if you keep them against a light substrate their color will fade. Any recommendations on a substrate that will support the plants and make the blue velvet color standout?

2) Being an office tank I won't be able to feed them on weekends. Is this OK?

3) I'll start with blue velvet but would like to add other shrimp later on. What are some other species I can add that are compatible but wont breed with the blue velvet.

I've watched a lot of Mark's Shrimp Tanks videos on YouTube and they are really informative. Any other recommended resources for things such as tank selection, test kits, filters, plants, how to raise/lower pH, feeding, etc...

Thanks in advance for your help. Any advice is appreciated.
