| Posted: 31 May 2021 09:59 PM PDT Ok so i read that alternating lights on and off with the display and refugium is supposed to help keep ph stable. Also read that if you leave the lights on too long you can bleach the cheato and kill it. Also read it can take out too much nitrates? Does that mean it would be better to have the fuge light turn on and off every hour from 8 pm to 10 am? Would this lead to more stable ph or would it swing? Or to have them on for a shorter period in general? Would this lead to more stable ph for a longer duration but cause a big swing when all lights are off? | Posted: 31 May 2021 07:54 PM PDT Hello fellow reefers. I have a Long term FOWLR (5 years) 65 gallon tank running an fugeless sump, ice cap skimmer, chaeto reactor, with AI hydra 64s. For most of my 5 years I was running a canister filter and just dealing with higher nitrates. Had a reasonably healthy tank for years with only a few cyano issues over the years. I added the new filtration, drilled an overflow and got the lights about 3 months ago as I wanted to start doing corals. I've got an assortment of softies LPS corals and about 12 fish. Powder brown, potters angel, clowns, etc. Within A few weeks and water changes my nitrates dropped to 0 with essentially ideal perimeters across the board. This triggered a massive Dino bloom about a week ago. I thought perhaps it was cyano and did a chemiclean treatment. No dice. I took out the chaeto reactor, started dosing nitrates to bring my tank to 5ppm or so. Running only blue spectrum lights, got this product called Dino x and am about 5 doses in with that. Got a cheap submersible uv sterilizer I'm running in the tank. Have done a 2 72 hour black outs. Nothing is working. Perhaps a tiny reduction in the Dino. I've read all the Dino manuals out there on all the forums and I can't get rid of this shit. Any words of wisdom here? Tricks that worked for you? All my palys and zoas are closed up but most of my other corals appear totally unaffected. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] | ||

| How to map out flow in established reef tank Posted: 31 May 2021 08:08 PM PDT I was wondering how you would map out the flow in a tank so I can see what spots get low, moderate and high flow. I was thinking using flake food to see which spot move fastest might be the easiest way but I'm not sure Thanks [link] [comments] | ||
