I don’t think it will ever look much better than this, low tech 10 gallon.

I have a 15 gallon tank. It's been sitting empty for months, is there anything super low maintenance I can do?

Posted: 31 May 2021 11:10 PM PDT

I have a 15 gallon tank and I'd like to have something in it instead of it sit empty and kinda ugly. I have a heater heater a filter from fish in the past. I don't want any fish in this tank again if I can handle it. I just wonder if there's something low maintenance because I struggle with depression and I will kill everything.

If this is unrealistic that's ok too! Thanks for any help

And the cycling begins

Got a couple decent pics of my 14gal low tech setup and figured I’d share. Running for around 4 months, with no real algae issues. Presently stocked with otos, green jade shrimp and a couple nerites for now, and hope to add Kubotai rasbora at some point. Looking forward to it filling in a bit more.

How could I spend so much money in less than one year for just one and only 22L tank? I'm broke now.

Do I need an elaborate lighting system for my entry-level aquarium? Please, help!

Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:19 AM PDT

My 8-years old son wanted an aquarium for his birthday, and I bought one for him – or, as it turned out, for myself. It's a simple 20-gallon kit with a built-in LED lighting system, heater, and a filter. We've also bought some fish – nothing fancy. A pair of guppies (your typical beginner's favorite fish), a zebra danio, and a bronze corydora. My son wanted more, but I think four is more than enough for a beginner.

So far, so good. Still, there is an issue of lighting that I'm worried about. You see, the lighting system the aquarium came with is a very simple one. You are supposed to manually turn the lights on and off, imitating the day and night cycle. So, I set the alarm on my phone to go off at 12-hour intervals. Unfortunately, sometimes I just press the snooze button again and again and then forget about the need to toggle the switch on or off. In the end, poor fish enjoy a day or a night that lasts some 14 hours. I'm not sure whether it does any serious harm, but I still feel like something has to be done about this issue.

Basically, what I need is a lighting system equipped with a timer that would turn the lights on and off at regular intervals. There are plenty of them on Amazon and stores like https://lightingandsupplies.com. Then again, if I'm going to spend some cash, why not pay a bit more and go for something more sophisticated, like a system that would make adjustments for the seasons of the year or slowly dim the lights to imitate twilight?

Not sure whether this advanced lighting system would be overkill or not. I mean, the fish I've got are known to be pretty healthy, and maybe all this fine-tuning is a bit too much for them. Still, if I succeed in my new hobby and manage to make my guppies thrive, the new fish I could be buying might need exactly this type of lighting system.

So, if you know any specific lighting system that will be just right for me, please, let me know. Any advice and tips are welcome. And I'd also really appreciate a link to a 101 guide to aquarium maintenance.
