Help Understanding What This Sore is on My Thai Oranda Posted: 19 Jun 2021 05:27 PM PDT Hello, I have a very well protected 1800 outdoor gallon pond in my yard with 10 young Oranda goldfish. I have been keeping fish for many years, but have never seen a sore like the one pictured. The parameters in the pond based on an API Master Test Kit: Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrites: 0ppm Nitrates: 10 ppm Temp: Currently around 71-73 depending on the day (Summer temps) pH: ~8 due to algae growth during the summer I keep the salinity around 0.2-0.3% I feed them small amounts of varying foods every other day. Generally bloodworms, brineshrimp, repashy gold gel food, peas, broccoli, hikari goldfish pellets etc. No other fish are exhibiting signs of illness, skittishness, sores or lethargy. The fish with the sore is acting completely normal, and the sore appeared overnight. Please see this image to get a good idea of what the sore looks like: https://i.imgur.com/UzBxXZ1h.jpg It seems to have grown around a scale, pushing the scales surrounding it up. You can visibly see the scale underneath the fleshy redness. Any idea what this is? Is it a parasite or infection? Is there anything other than salt baths that I can give him to ensure his recovery? Thank you so much :) [link] [comments]

Back Porch Pond! Help with details? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 08:21 PM PDT My daughters proposed the idea build a back porch pond as a summer project, I've got fairly limited experience with goldfish but experience with other fish and tanks! But I've never built a pond!! :D TSC and Lowe's both have big metal containers I was thinking would work well since we can't dig in our backyard (and I believe others have done this? The wiki says 75+30g, I was gonna look at 150g, would work for two comets, each kid could pick one out? I've never seen them in the yard but I'm gonna assume it's because we don't have a pond; but what do we do about pond predators? Do they sell covers for ponds at speciality stores? Will the tank need heated consistently or just during winter? I assume year round due to heat loss during the night right? The two spots I'm looking at are both in partial shade to full shade throughout the day! Should I put a substrate in the bottom? We have coarse sand and could buy play sand or rocks from the store too!! Cycling is the same as a normal tank right? Add ammonia, testing, etc? Would I be able to attempt to have floating plants in here? Contain them within some tubing so they don't get into the filter? Do goldfish eat frogbit/salvinia/dwarf lettuce as they do duckweed? Any other personal favorite plants? If I get a big metal tub or a big plastic tub will I have to make a brace around it, or are they strong enough to stand on their own? Do I have to worry about frogs getting in the pond? Any diseases they can pass on? Goldfish choking on them once they're bigger? I've done some light research but I want to hear from people who've done this before! I'll try to figure out this reddit stuff and try to 'cross post' it to the pond reddit page!! My girls and I thank you in advance :D! [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:43 PM PDT Hi there! Unfortunately tonight my filter died. It was given to me with the tank used so I figure it just got tired. I have a 60gal w 4 fancies so bioload is a bit heavy. Looking for mid expense 120 max hopefully. Also something I can get ahold of pretty quick, Amazon prime, chewy, pet stores Thank you! Can i keep one oranda in a 20 gal with maybe some snails? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:26 PM PDT just wanna know because i really want to keep a oranda. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:23 PM PDT Firstly, 0 ammonia/ nitrite 20 nitrate, just checked. It's a 55 gal with a calico fantail, oranda, and butterfly tail 'black moor'. The calico and butterfly tail are probably 2 inches, the oranda is 3. We got the oranda and black guy at the same time, they were the same size, had a friend with the calico in a ten gallon so I took her bc she was about the same size as my other two. The oranda has always been a pig, and had a little bit of food aggression, but we spread the food around so it was too bad. Within the last two weeks I've had to feed it separately because it was really going after the other two during feeding time. It's not mating behavior, as the oranda will get directly underneath, head to head, and chase them up. Within the last week however, I noticed the calico sitting in one corner quite a bit, and it's fins looked a little ragged. I watched them for about an hour to see what's going on, and the oranda herds the other two into the corner then sits with them. If they try to leave to do some scrounging around, he chases them back to the corner and then just stays there too. It seems mostly focused on the calico. Super weird, no idea what's going on. I plan on getting some big plants to break up sight lines, as maybe he has a territory? Any insight or advice on this situation welcome. I am planning on upgrading to a 75 next summer or sooner if need be [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Jun 2021 09:04 AM PDT My comet Finley has been acting a wee bit stange lately and it seems like hes havin a bit of trouble keeping his butt from floating up. He spends time in the corner of the tank with his head right at the bubbler and his bum in the air almost fully vertical and pretty still. Eating normally so I believe it may be early swim bladder issues. Anything that might help him feel better? My other two fancies are having no issues and are acting as normal. [link] [comments]
Unfinished basement & Wisconsin winters Posted: 19 Jun 2021 02:33 AM PDT I'm in an interesting (cramped) living situation while in college where my goldfish couldn't come with me. This means they're living in my grandparents unfinished basement and likely will be until spring of next year. I've got my two 7 year old black moors in a 70 gallon reservoir with a sponge filter. They have been in that in my bedroom for 5 years, stable temps of course. Then I've got my two comet goldfish in a 100 gallon stock tub thing also with a sponge filter. Also previously in my bedroom. Yes, it's very unsightly but in highschool I wasn't trying to break the bank on glass aquariums of similar size. They've been in the basement now for about 2 months, everyone is doing great. Even with the temps outside being 90°+ in my area the basement stays nice and cool. They're on concrete floors. I suspect however, it's going to get pretty fucking cold down there in the winter. I'm not sure how cold at this point. Likely not freeze the water cold though. I don't know if I should be investing in some heaters to try and keep them 60° and higher over the winter or let everyone get chilly and go dormant for a few months. I've never had a pond/had to winter so I don't know what maintenance the second option entails. Also have never had to heat their plastic tubs so I'm not sure the safety risks on that if any. I'd love some guidance, I'm trying to prepare early as possible to keep everyone alive and well! [link] [comments]
