Questions about hospital tank

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 06:43 PM PDT

Hello everyone. One of my goldies unfortunately passed away today. I know goldfish are social and I want to get another goldie for my baby that's left, to have a friend. Im very VERY protective over my other goldfish and I very much want to do everything right before adding a new fish in there. I have a 20g im not currently using, if I fill it with clean water and a sponge filter from the main tank can that work as a temporary hospital tank while I treat the new goldie for diseases before adding it in? I wouldn't keep him in there more than 2/3 weeks while I quarantine it, and then add it to my 65g. For hospital tanks do I have to let a bacteria colony form? I mean do I have to cycle a hospital tank beforehand? Or would weekly water changes work? I know 20g is small for a goldie but im curious if it would be ok for a goldie hospital. Also don't know if I want to bring home a baby goldie or a more grown one yet so the bio load will also depend on that right? Whenever I've gotten new fish i always treated them for bacteria and parasites but should I also treat for something else? Can I also use both parasite and bacterial medication at the same time or would it be best to do it separately? Thank you for your help.

Fungus Help/Advice.

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 10:57 PM PDT

Hi all.

I got two little goldfish from the pet shop about a week ago, a black telescope & an oranda. Yesterday, I noticed noticed the tele had a tiny fluff of fungus on one of his side fins. I already have the water salted to 0.3% to treat for a mild case of ich. I've read the salt should take care of the fungus too, but I am just looking for a bit of reassurance. I've never actually dealt with fungus before so I'm a bit worried. It hasn't gotten bigger to spread anywhere today, but it also hasn't gone away.

If it's helpful, I have the fish in a 40 gallon breeder and I'm currently doing daily 90% water changes to encourage growth & help get rid of the ich (I add the salt back in each time).

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Question about health

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 07:10 PM PDT

Hello everyone. Unfortunately today one of my goldies passed away. I've had a couple goldies pass away on me and im quiet distraught to say the least. I have one goldfish I love very dearly in a 65g by herself now except for some snails. I would like to get a companion for her but I would like to not have a repeat of one of these deaths. I've had two goldfish that out of nowhere developed white clumps on their skin. Kind of like a white tumor that kept growing. One of them passed away a day or two after the tumors appeared. My other goldfish was fine and my water was fine. My dear Jolene that passed today developed a white bump and growth on her side about 2 weeks ago. I started with a 50 percent water change and started to provide smaller daily water changes which made it stop growing. 2 or 3 days after the growth appeared it disappeared but now she had an open wound. I thought maybe she scratched it on the one rock decor I had in there so I took that out and started treating the tank with Melafix. It didn't seem to get any worse in the first week, I even thought it was starting to heal a little and then yesterday I come down and the wound is all red. I did a 50 percent water change and started dossing with melafix again. But that seemed to make it worse as she started hanging out at the top of the tank breathing kind of heavy and refusing food. I decided to set up q hospital tank out of desperation because I thought maybe my other goldie or snails were picking qt the wound. I set up a 20g half way so I treated it essentially as a 10-15g tank with all clean water and an airline plus a heater. I know goldfish prefer cold water but I read so many times that people recommend raising the temperature a little when they're sick to help them. So I did that out of desperation. I also dosed the tank with melafix and parasite medication. I thought since the melafix didn't help maybe it was parasitic instead. I believe all the stressed finally made her passed and I really can't help but blame myself. I loved my little Jolene very very much and I can't help but feel scared that if I get another fish ill just hurt them more than help them. How can I help prevent this next time? What are those white lumps that they develop? Why didn't the melafix help her? What can I do better next time? I'm so ashamed im asking for help after she passed but I guess I knew once I saw the white lump on her that it would be her time to go soon so I just decided to try to help her by myself instead of facing the enatable, that I wouldn't be able to help her even if I asked for help. I would love any advice, thank you.

Ammonia Test - total noob at fish and pond stuff but looks like filter and plants are doing their job, yay!

Out of town for 7 days- does anyone know a good extended feeder for 2 fish in quarantine.

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 12:58 PM PDT

I've got two little comet goldfish that I am keeping in quarantine for a few months because I noticed a couple spots that made me a little uncomfortable.

They seem to be extremely healthy, but I just want to be 100% certain they're not carrying some kind of bacteria/fungus before adding them to a bigger tank with the older goldies.

These were rescues that I volunteered to take, so I'm not 100% certain about their background.

I've got these two little guys in a 30 gallon tank and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a 7-day feeder that I could drop in with them. Although I'm thinking I could just do a three or four day feeder too.

Because of they They are only in a 30 gallon tank, I do worry about the ammonia level of any feeder that I drop in. This won't be a problem with my other goldies because their tank is much larger, but I'm a little concerned about these two.

Current water parameters look good but they're not fully cycled and I've been having to change out water still to lower the nitrates.

Will be gone for six nights and seven days And I don't have anyone close to us who I trust to come in and feed them. Any suggestions would be much appreciated..

My dad said I can fit 3 goldfish in a 4 gallon tank, can someone please prove him wrong

My fish have ick, I have them on the blue ick treatment which seems to have killed all the beneficial bacteria and caused ammonia to rise. Can I do a water change or will that mess up the treatment.

Goldfish's mouth staying slightly open, is this a problem?

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 01:00 PM PDT

My goldfish's mouth and "snout" area turned white over the course of a month, I didn't see any behavioural changes except recently, I noticed that her mouth remains very slightly open at all times. She seems capable of closing it and she absolutely demolished a gel block today without any problems, so I'm not sure if this is an issue or not. Tank parameters are in a good range (0 ammonia/nitrite, < 30 ppm nitrate, pH ~7) and behaviour seems otherwise normal. I did check google and her mouth isn't "stuck" open or exaggeratedly open, it's just like a little kid staring at a screen slightly slack-jawed.

is 2 aquaclear 110’s on a 60 gallon tank enough filtration for 3 goldfish?

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 10:28 AM PDT

Hi friends! I am looking to buy my first fancy goldfish. I am currently cycling a 286l tank. Is the only difference between $10 (5cm) and $100 (15cm) fish their age? Or are some actually genetically larger? If I buy a small one, will it still eventually grow into a giant beautiful cow cow?
