Happy updates about my 6 yr old axolotl!

Posted: 19 Jun 2021 08:50 AM PDT

First off let me say I am so happy this subreddit exists because I have loved axolotls for so many years, and I love seeing all the cute babies!

I have a 6 year old axolotl that I purchased when she was just a wee baby, and I've been able to watch her grow and loved every second of it. She's been through the ringer of me figuring out the best way to care for her as I gained knowledge through the years. (She wasn't an impulse decision, but as we all know, you gain knowledge as you gain experience!)

The summers here get VERY hot (even with air conditioning) so normally I would move her into the basement each summer to provide her with the cool temps she needs. It's been difficult to keep doing that bc sometimes I forget she's down there, and plus - I love seeing her swimming around. She's a very curious gal and I think she likes seeing us walking around too!

Recently - I purchased a chiller! I'm very excited about this as I've wanted to do this forever but haven't had the funds to do so. I recently got a full time job so now I can FINALLY get her all the things I've been dreaming of... Because she DESERVES IT 😤💕 buying a chiller was definitely necessary, as aquarium fans only bring temps down a few degrees, while water temps can get near 80 (!!!!) in the heat. I've done a lot of research about this, so don't worry! (Her temp hasn't reached 80, luckily! I think I'd cry if that happened.)

I'm going to be upgrading her tank to a bigger size, probably around 40-50gal bc of the size of the chiller. I'm going to be doing some simple aqua scaping too (bc I love all those Pinterest pics of amazing scapes). However - I'll be doing a bare bottom tank. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of bare bottom aqua scapes? I've only been able to do the bare minimum for her so I want to create something very amazing to look at.

I'm going to post updates to this subreddit as I go on through this upgrade! If anyone has any ideas for decor or plants I should include, I would love to hear it! I'll definitely be posting pics as I go through with it, especially of my sweet girl.

I'm very happy about all these upgrades and I just wanted to share my excitement! 🥰

Temporary container

Posted: 19 Jun 2021 08:03 AM PDT

I seem to have made the dumb choice of getting an axolotl while my tank is still cycling. As the ammonia levels are approaching uncomfortable levels (0.25 - 0.5) I was thinking of moving him to a temporary enclosure for the next month or so until the tank is cycled.

With that In mind, my plan right now is to put him in a (filterless) 5 gallon bucket.

Assuming I do complete water changes daily or every other day, would this be a safe situation for him?

Advice needed

Posted: 19 Jun 2021 07:32 AM PDT

I'm new to this subreddit as I just got 4 axolotls. Two of them I have had for 3 months and the others for 2 months. The two I first got came and they are happy and healthy and big chonky water sausages :) but then I got two more from another breeder and at first they were beautiful. One of them is still growing and thriving but the other one, same tank, same water care, same feeding ... .first he got a fungus on his gills. I tubbed him. The next day, it looked like his tank mate was starting to get fungus so I tubbed her too. I gave black tea baths and the fungus fell off but just in case I kept them tubbed and did daily water changes on them for a week and a half, drained 75 percent of the water in their big tank also. Chalk, his tank mate has kept her gills and she is fine, has an amazing appetite and seems very happy but quickly outgrowing her tank mate...which is Pickle who is much smaller, doesn't always have an appetite but eats every other day at least. The longest he's gone is two days without eating a thing and it seriously worries me to death. His little gills have all but shrunk to almost nothing and his fringe is just gone. I feel so bad and I'm trying to get him to eat regularly. I've added crushed coral in a little bag to the filter to try to harden it up as the pH does stay around 6.7 to 7.4 all the time. I'm trying anything to help. The water parameters have been fine most days but sometimes there is a tiny bit of ammonia so I do change 25 to 30 percent of the water those days. I check the water daily on both of my tanks for them just because I'm so paranoid something is going to happen with them. I'm really trying and I've read a lot about them but not sure what else, if anything, I can do. I will insert pictures below from my phone and can get better ones tonight.

I appreciate any advice as I do adore these little baby dragons and want to do whatever I can for them.
