Rules

  • No selling. You can post RAOKs as crossposts from other subs only.
  • No blogspam. You can post your personal site, YouTube channel, shop, etc. once per week only.
  • No shortlinks or URL shorteners, excluding the sidebar. We use shortlinks in the sidebar because there is a character limit.
  • Use caution when posting a grossly overstocked tank. It's not going to fare well here.
  • Don't be an ass.
  • No rabble rousing. Yes, we know that half-gallon tank Walmart is selling as a Betta habitat is inhumane. Don't post about that kind of thing here for any reason.
  • Businesses and retailers are allowed to post here, but the blog/sitespam rules still apply to them. Business/retailer accounts MUST be flaired as such.

Subreddit changes and updates

Posted: 30 May 2021 02:25 PM PDT

Hey everyone, just a quick note to let you know what's changed recently:

Summary

New changes:

  • I updated the sidebar/Helpful Resources post. You can see it here.
  • I added u/MAGIC_EYE_BOT as a moderator to assist in getting rid of karma bot posts

These changes were made a little while ago:

  • Flair is now required when submitting a post
  • A welcome message is now sent out to new users who subscribe
  • Submissions with the word "seed/s" in the title are automatically reported (not removed) for a mod to check out. Posts promoting buying seeds online are usually removed, due to community request.

Details

Sidebar/Helpful Resources

There were a lot of broken and outdated links in the sidebar, so I've gone through and updated everything. Some links were removed entirely, and some links were changed to new posts/sites. Thank you to everyone who reported the broken links!

Our list of Non-US vendors is pretty short (I had to remove all the AUS sites, as they weren't active anymore). If you have a Non-US vendor you like, please reply here and I'll make sure it's good before I add it.

Magic Eye Bot

I've gotten a lot of messages, reports, and comments recently about karma bots reposting old images for the purpose of karma whoring. In order to help combat this issue, I've added u/MAGIC_EYE_BOT as a moderator. If you want to read more about it, you can find an FAQ here or read its documentation here. A lot of larger subreddits use this bot with great success, so I'm hoping it'll help here as well. If you submit a post and it's removed by MAGIC_EYE_BOT, you'll know because the bot will leave a comment stating why it was removed. If this is done in error, simply message the mods and we'll fix you up.

Other minor changes

A little while ago, I made some minor changes to help our community find information better. New submissions now require flair, and a welcome message is sent to new subscribers to point them in the right direction (to the rules, and the sidebar post).

Additionally, any post with the word "seed" or "seeds" in the title is now automatically reported, but not removed. The community has asked in the past that comments and submissions promoting aquarium seeds be removed, as they typically die in a relatively short period of time and are considered a scam. If the post meets that criteria, it will be removed by a moderator.

If you have any comments or suggestions about these or any other changes, please send a mod mail or reply here!

Which Liquid Fertilizer Should I Use?

Posted: 30 May 2021 11:07 PM PDT

I have a relatively mature high-tech tank and I'm wondering what fertilizer brand I should use. I'm content with how grown in my plants are and I want to focus on healthy growth and water parameter stability without risking excess nutrients, algae blooms, etc.. I've heard that 'lean' fertilizers like ADA's Brighty series is a good choice for what I need. Can anybody attest to that? Or is there another brand that I should look into? Thanks!

Ammonia tolerance for plants

Posted: 30 May 2021 05:21 PM PDT

I'm trying to cycle a 10 gallon tank, I was using fish food but it's just not working. I'm going to start using pure ammonia pretty soon. I have a couple plants in my tank and was wondering how high I could bring the ammonia levels without them dying or melting. Does it even affect them?
