My pygmy sunfish breeding setup

I added some amphipods that I caught in a vernal pool to my 2-week old pondwater jar. My diving beetle IMMEDIATELY caught, killed, and ate one! It was awesome!

Any idea what’s this “cob” web from the wood in my jarrarium? Should I let it be or spray it with neem oil?

1 year old Jars in the Spring Sun

Hello there!

Any things I could change before going long term?

This is how I plan on getting started...anything wrong with it?

I'm going to go to a local mucky creek near me that has lots of living stuff. I'm gonna scoop some muck in to my jar, so that it's no more that 1/5 full of muck, then I'll get some stagnant water and pretty much fill the rest of the jar, and then I'll put some leaves/other stuff in the immediate area (on the creek bed, for eg) in the water. Then I'll seal the jar...does it need to be air tight, or can it be a simple Ball jar lid or rubber gasket?

Also, lighting: I plan on putting it in ambient light, maybe some direct light for an hour or so, but nothing extreme. Lighting tips?

Thanks!

Bow down to the Holy Snail God

My son and I made these "pond in a jars" last summer. This was the 1st (& only) we've ever done. There's still plants and snails in there, but not much else.

Lotsa life

Found a clutch of snail eggs on some plants I bought so I transferred them to their own jarrarium.

Anything like the 'Eco-Sphere' in Canada?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:16 PM PDT

I wanted a really low-maintence 'life form' in my room. Other than a bonsai and a carnivorous plant, I was planning to get a fish or crab, but will be selfish enough to buy it and then let it die in the next month because of the time spent on work and volunteer. I saw Eco-Sphere and thought it would be perfect for me. I tried purchasing online, but it seems impossible to ship it out to Canada. I was wondering if there are any alternative to the 'eco-sphere' that is available for purchase.

https://eco-sphere.com/

Edit: I can't make my own jarrarium, I live deep within the city of Toronto and can't find any source of getting wildlife in a jar.

Viability of having one or two greenhouse frogs in a large Jararium?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:58 PM PDT

Hello,

I'm currently doing some research on jararium. I'm currently wondering if I'd be able to have a couple greenhouse frogs (1 inch size at adulthood) in a large Jararium? Or if anyone has tried it?

Thank you
