I've been dealing with nasty string algae so I glued some Scotch-brite together to use with extra-long tweezers. How do you clean your jarrarium?

Hi so i made a jarrium from my long using the substrate and plants growing in there along with some little critters, however i have now found out that you are supposed to let the water cycle for a week or two before adding plants and or animals? is this true and if so should i remove the animals and plants?
