How do I keep a 'lonely' fish entertained?

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 08:07 AM PDT

A couple months ago, I bought 2 comet goldfish, and they've been living together ever since. Yesterday, one of them passed (I'm not sure of what, I tested the water and checked them for signs of disease and found nothing). I only have one left now, and I've been meaning to get more, except my area is currently in lockdown and all the pet stores aren't selling live animals.

Can my goldfish feel lonely and/or bored by itself? Is there anything I can do to help that?

Breeding experts, help me prepare my goldfish for their second spawn! Question in the comments.

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I have 2 sets of goldfish and am trying to spawn one set, one set is a 2 year old ranchu pair and one is a one year old oranda pair

My first ever spawn this year was fairly successful however now I feel like I could do a much better job the second time around, the main thing I need help with is how to trigger the spawn.

For my first spawn I just pumped them full of blood worms with some mops in the tank and hoped.

It is now summer and warmer though so I assume I will need to lower my tank temp, usually sits at 75f all year. Continue feeding high protein and wait?

Should I be looking to to raise the temp back after a week? 2? A month? Anyone with experience I would love to chat with!

Goldfish seems to constantly lay down and rest, while other dishes are swimming. What’s wrong with him?

Sand confusion

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 11:38 AM PDT

Hi ! I recently purchased a 75 gallon tank for my soon to be herd of fancy goldfish. I'm trying to get it all prepped to cycle...but I realized I had no idea how much sand to do! I read some mixed opinions online about how many lbs I need. Any ideas of how much pool filter sand I will need for my new tank?? Thanks so much !

how much should a baby goldfish grow in 2 months?

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 05:22 PM PDT

I got a baby black moor goldfish about two months ago. he is/was about 2 inches long. so I thought it would be ok to keep him in a ten gallon before upgrading him. i'm getting a 20 gallon set in a couple weeks.

I might just be paranoid, but I heard goldfish grow very fast and he seems to be around the same size, or just marginally bigger? is this normal? how long should it take for a moor to grow say an inch bigger?

all tank parameters are normal, I use seachem prime and stability.

Update on New Eye

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 08:07 AM PDT

Hello

I am writing this for those interested in an update about New Eye, my beautiful Oranda boy that was stuck floating upside down.

I had already put him in a salt bath. After soms tips here I tried a salt dip in epsom salt and then fasting him for 5 days. Unfortunately he did not improve at all.

On tuesday April 13th I managed the find a vet specialised in fish, about 30 minutes from where I live. I was able to make an appointment for wednesday the 14th.

So after work I rushed home to pick him up and take him to the vet. She felt his belly, took an x-ray and an ultrasound. However according to what she saw on the images nothing explained his floating.

She had 1 strong antibiotic that had worked on a previous patient (a comet) but had to order it. So he had to stay with her until she received the product. (She told me she has 2x 2000L/528 gallons tanks in the back - so I joked he wouldnt wanne come back home after such luxury)

I called her today to get an update, since it's been a week. She told me he hasn't improved at all, she is going to keep trying different meds and treatments but she is starting to lose hope...

She also received 5 more goldies this week with the same problem who are also not responding to treatment. So I started thinking maybe it was something in the water but none of my other goldies have any issues. I don't know where the other goldies live but I would assume the chances of them living nearby me is slim. So that would rule out the water.

I ofcourse gave her permission to keep trying. But I am preparing myself to bring him home and euthanise him myself. I want to see him alive one last time, so I can say goodbye to him.

Hopefully the vet finds a miracle...

Is this swim bladder?

Posted: 22 Apr 2021 03:51 AM PDT

One of the goldfishes in my parents' pond is sick. We think it's issues with the swim bladder, but would really appreciate a second opinion!

The last time I was home he was merely standing still on his head for short periods of time, and then swimming perfectly normal. But now he's apparently having problems with swimming, as you can see in this video that my dad sent me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnIWNEWbjhQ

It's still too cold for feeding, but there's a possibility that he might have eaten some of the food thrown in for the sturgeons that are also in the pond. None of the other fishes are sick in any way.

The pet store recommended Baktopur Direct by the brand Sera, which is why he's currently isolated in the video you see. The wiki here says to feed peas, but one of the instructions given for the medication was to not feed anything, so I'm not sure what to do.

Thank you in advance for any and all input/advice!

Can anyone help me identify this pretty lil thing? I pulled her out of my koi pond to keep my new koi company until its time to transition to the pond. I have a variety of fancy tailed fish and gold fish and a single female koi in the pond.
