missing koi

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 07:24 PM PDT

we recently installed a new pond in our yard. we got 4 koi fish and we've been checking the water almost every day and everything has been going smoothly. today we realized that one of our koi fish was completely missing. not dead anywhere, just gone. i have no clue how this happened. our yard is completely fenced and we live next to a lake so i feel like it would be unlikely for a bird to choose the fish in the pond over any fish in the lake. plus we provided the fish with plenty of hiding spots. we are in florida so could cane toads have eaten our fish? what do you think happened? and how can we protect our pond from this happening again?

Do Koi go "re-dormant" if their pond turns cold after a warm spell?

The title. I am in Minnesota USA and we had a run of early warm weather. My 20+ koi came out of winter dormancy looking spry. Now the extended forecast has lows in the 30s. Is there anything I should do in terms of feeding cold water food or perhaps running the heater to warm things up just a bit? Water temps were up above 55 degrees for a couple of weeks, but it's dropping from there. I am running the aerator and one of the pumps following a seasonal clean out with some cold water bacteria.

My default couse of action is to let spring run its natural course, sprinkling some food every couple days until the water is consistently warmer.

Can I put 8-10cm kois in a 45x55 aquarium? Planning on putting them in a pond after they grow to big. If so, tips would be very appreciated.
