Thought I’d make a little instruction on my way of making plant holders from craft wire, pothos are great added filtration

Do I really need to quarantine & treat plants before adding them to my aquarium/paludarium? Nah....

130 days since scraping. Photo taken just after weekly maintenance. 40x40x40 cm cube nano.

Just completed setting up my first planted tank!

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 07:29 PM PDT

My first time ever aquarium tank. It has been a month and two weeks since I set up this tank. I am thinking of getting some neon tetras next week after checking my tank water. Any suggestions are welcome.

My wife and I decided to rescape our tank and we love the results!

Setting up my first planted tank, a little larger than your conventional starting tank (~220G). Please give me advice so I don't build a 6' cesspool!

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 11:55 PM PDT

For some context, taking over a used 6'x2.5'x2' tank with accompanying 4' sump tank and a filter system fit for several arowanas, but I'm not too keen on bare tanks so planning on converting it to a planted tank. It's a little large and as you can imagine it's gonna take up a good chunk of the living room, so I'm trying my best to plan and hopefully not end up with a transparent bathtub of algae right smack in the middle of my house.

(I do have a ~10'x5'x2' backyard pond stocked with tetras, barbs, corys etc. so not a complete novice, but haven't touched a fish tank in nearly a decade!)

Here's the current plan:

Set-Up:

  • CO2: No
  • Substrate: ~2'' of pool filter sand, possibly with root tabs? (Flourish or any aqua soil will bankrupt me.)
  • Ferts: Do I need liquid ferts? I have no idea.
  • Filter: 4' worth of biofilters and a UV light, although I'll be removing the activated charcoal (right?) Not too sure what the pump flow rate is, but I'm not too concerned given the entire setup was used to house multiple arowanas...
  • Lighting: ~150W of cheap, no-brand RGB LED flood lights, aiming for 15 lumens/liter "low light" conditions (Based on online calculator) (and hoping that RGB will be sufficiently 'full spectrum') [Probably 6 hours on?]
  • Heating: None (I live in the tropics)

Aquascape (Oh god save me):

  • Design: Tank will be viewable from 3 sides, so planning on making maybe 3 'islands' in a 'V' shape? I've just been browsing planted tank ideas on this sub and online, but ideas would be greatly welcomed! My current idea is not to have too many types of plants, but a hell of a lot of whichever types I settle on. Also like the sand look, so no carpeting/ foreground plants.
  • Hardscape: Driftwood, probably with Java ferns tied on
  • Plants: ??? I'm so lost although there's an aquatic plant farm near me and I'm hoping to just listen to the boss' advice. Plants are pretty cheap (~USD1.1 per plastic 'pot' for common types) so if some don't survive I can live with it. This is where I really really need help. I'll be busy researching this, but just in case I miss anything out, any recommended resources on which plants are least risky in low-tech, low-light set-ups and which are appropriate for midground/ background? [For background plants I'm comfortable with the plants growing up to 2.5', and currently thinking some kind of vallisneria?]

Fish (This is really not urgent and probably at least a month out from now...):

  • Larger fish: Congo Tetras, Bosemani Rainbowfish, Glass Catfish, Denison Barbs (all are avaliable at my LFS and range from ~USD1.1-2.3/ piece)
  • Small fish: (Although I'm really worried that they might suicide down the overflow never to be seen again... Tank was designed for arowanas so overflow holes are fairly large.) Cardinal tetras (~USD25/ 50 pieces)
  • Algae eaters/ misc.: Ghost shrimp? SAEs, otos etc.

Please let me know how this general plan sounds! As you can tell there are some bits (the aquascaping) that are still really iffy and I'd really love to hear all yall expert inputs. And of course, I'll provide updates that might either be my plants nicely settling in or my tank growing greener and murkier!

Hornwort yay or nay?

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 03:07 AM PDT

so i read hornwort is a fast growing beginner friendly plant, good for outcompeting algae. but i don't see it often in pics of planted tanks. thinking of getting some as it is cheap and i like the look and could do with a few more plants. what's your opinion, advantages, disadvantages...?

How do I make a tiny water garden

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 02:21 AM PDT

First off, sorry for my English, I might not use the proper words for what I'm talking about. Also, I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this question, but it's the closest I could think of and Google isn't helping me much. If you can point me to the right direction, what to Google or where to ask this question, I'd be thankful.

So, I'm wondering if I can just put water in a bowl, use some kind of soil or rocks at the bottom and plant some water plants. Not planing on putting any fish in it, just wanna have a lil water garden. Questions are: Would it work? Would it have to be an open or closed system (or either works)? What kind of substrate would work best or at least decently? Can plants survive without any filtration? And I'm guessing if it would work, I'd have to change the water from time to time, it would probably get dirty, would that shock the plants? Any additional info is welcome.
