I ordered pearl weed and Anubis's nana petite I want to put a ram snail. I'm just worried about keeping algae low if the plants only get light from the sun. Should I use a lid also?

wild plants/bugs in central virginia good for a jar terrarium?

my girlfriend's birthday is close and i was thinking that a jar terrarium would make for a really cute gift. what wild plants/mushrooms/bugs (or even snails or something idk) in central virginia would be good for this? would the time of year (march) affect my success with making this? i've never made anything like this before so any advice would be very much appreciated :)
