Just a little post to warn people to check their tap water

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 09:11 PM PDT

I've never had problems with ammonia and starting last week I noticed that my ammonia levels were through the roof. Did waters changes, the whole nine yards and nothing was improving so I thought to myself, "hmm. Perhaps I should check my tap water". Behold, my tap water was measuring 2.0 ppm !!! I suppose our water provider just recently started treating the water with chloramine. I ordered prime water conditioner as I've heard that does wonders with battling ammonia. It's crazy that I wasn't given a heads up on this.. good thing my fish are still alive. This might be a well known thing but I didn't know this could happen so I figured I'd give people a heads up!

Thinking of getting out of goldfish...

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 03:48 PM PDT

I recently had to euthanize my beloved oranda goldfish for some sort of health issue that resulted in dropsy. We caught it early and did our best to treat with epsom salts/metroplex/kanaplex and so on, but it just wasn't helping the poor guy. The whole situation has really made me feel disillusioned with goldfish keeping. I'm not interested in discussing the ethics of keeping them, but even goldfish lovers like myself tend to understand they are more prone to some disorders as a result of their breeding. This guy was in a planted 40 gallon with great water quality (weekly 50% water changes, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, never over 20 ppm nitrate) and beefed up filtration. He was fed the highest quality gel food with shelled peas, blanched spinach, and occasional frozen foods like bloodworms. All that to say, I'm sure I made mistakes here and there, but overall his husbandry was really good. These are my first goldfish (I generally keep tropical and have never struggled to keep those species healthy), and I felt prepared for their potential health issues, but going through all this effort only to still see my fish meet an untimely and painful end has been devastating and disheartening.

The thing is, I still have his sweet tank mate. Keeping her means getting another one for companionship and I just... I don't know now if this area of fishkeeping is for me. I've really lost my heart for it and now I feel there's other fish I'd rather keep. Not to mention I'd only look at high end breeders, and those fish are-- rightfully so-- expensive. I love this fish very much as an individual, but I don't think this area of the hobby is right for me at this time anymore. I'm lucky to live near several wonderful fish stores, including Aquarium Coop, so I know I could rehome her through one of them. Still, I'm also caught up on the guilt of giving a fish away when I truly take my commitment to them seriously and don't view them as disposable.

I guess I just wanted to hear from people who have currently or in the past kept goldfish, and what their advice would be for me in this situation? How do you sort out the guilt of keeping a fish when you're disillusioned with the species and lost your heart for them, versus the guilt of rehoming them even if they may not go to someone who will be able to offer them what you can? I'd appreciate everyone's experiences.

Thank you!

Small black edging appearing after ich treatment. I’ve been doing 1/3 water changes with the ich treatment daily for 5 days (20 gal and only fish). He had fin rot initially but his ich cleared up by day 3. Could it be regrowth or ammonia? I only have strips but am getting kit tomorrow.

New tank syndrome , I changed over half the water yesterday and the nitrate levels are through the roof.

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I just changed it again and I now just have stressed/grumpy aqua hamsters. How do I fix this without upsetting them more?

Every other component in the tank is fine. Healthy ph level, normal GH, normal KH

Please know that I'm aware I probably made a mistake. I want to figure out how to prevent this. I have my keys next to me and I'm ready to go to the store if I have to. Just please don't bully me that wont help my fish :(

Fungal infection? Or wen growth? Should I start treating with Pimafix?

I have a 75 gallon tank and I’m looking to get orandas, what next?

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 03:00 PM PDT

I have been a fish keeper for many years with mostly bettas and tropical fish. Now I want to get into the world of goldfish, but I'm not sure where to start. Is there anything specific goldfish would need that isn't what tropical fish require? Besides the extra space obviously.

Fish-sitting for 10 days, how can I make this the least stressful possible for the little buddy ?

Fish-sitting for 10 days, how can I make this the least stressful possible for the little buddy ?

Hello !

This morning my neighbours unexpectedly left me their fish for 10 days, and I forgot to ask for their contact info (it was too early for my brain, and theirs too probably). I also don't know anyone who has fishes who could answer my questions/give me advice. So I found you guys, read the wiki, and now here is what I got :

I have food pellets, which they instructed me to feed to the fish every morning (this is the only instruction I have).

He is alone in the tank, which is 18 cubic centimeters (way too small), no filtration system, no substrate or decoration. This the main raison I wanted to reach out to you guys, because with a setup like that, I know the little buddy is going to be stressed.

I put the tank between some of my plants, and they partially overshadow the tank. I chose this place because it is very stable in terms of temperature/light, quiet, but I still come often enough to check if his attitude changes.

The water is clear for now, but I don't have any way of testing it's quality. I can't really do much on that parameter anyway in 10 days.

For the questions part :

I was thinking of adding some plastic toys (the only thing I have on hand that looks aquarium-safe) so he would have something to hide behing/explore/play with, is that a good idea ?

What can I do over than that to make his stay the least stressful possible ? (keep in mind that I can't buy him anything, unfortunately)

Thanks a lot ! (and if my english is unclear, please don't hesitate to ask me to phrase it in others ways, english is not my first langage)

Bullying or mating?

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 03:02 AM PDT

So I've recently got two fancy goldfish- both butterfly telescopes (they're so pretty😍)- and they've been fine for two and a half weeks, now all of a sudden one of them has began chasing the other around the tank. I don't see any signs of fin damage, but it's pretty continuous. Water parameters are good, I'm deffo not under feeding (they also have plants that they nibble), they have 126liters with only two Batman snails for company, and I don't see any evidence of disease (they're both hungry and active, with bright colours, and their poo is fine). Should I be concerned? What can I do about it? I've seen online about getting a tank divider, but I really don't want to do that since they both enjoy the bubbles from the Venturi on my filter. Could it be mating? I don't know what sex they are though! Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated x
