Last resorts for a ranchu struggling with swim bladder?

Posted: 17 Mar 2021 09:22 PM PDT

Hi, me again. Probably the last time I'll be posting with this question.

My very beloved girl is struggling with swim bladder issues. She's always been more stockier than the other ranchus and I believe that due to faulty breeding, is now struggling to swim properly (semi-unrelated, but I got her from King Koi and supposedly they are known for selling fish with issues). She is currently in a hospital tank and has been for ~2 weeks now, showing no signs of improvement. She is still relatively active, eats when I feed her (I hand feed her peas), and tries very hard to right herself and swim the right way. I've tried fasting her, epsom salt baths, feeding peas, increasing the temperature in the hospial tank, etc but nothing has worked. I feel so awful. She means so much to me and I hate to see her like this.

I need to know at what point I should end her suffering. I don't know what else I can do to help. I know there is a swim bladder surgery but I dont know if that's worth it, since it's not even guaranteed to work.

Any advice for me? I love her and I don't want to lose her, but I don't want her to suffer anymore either.

Thank you.

My goldfish tank cycling journey!

Posted: 17 Mar 2021 08:23 PM PDT

Hi all! I just wanted to share my notes of the cycling progression of the 85 gallon I just finished cycling for my 2 comet goldfish! This was a fishless cycle and I kept my duo in their hospital tank (with daily pwc) during this period. Bellow are links to what I used to help me get started! For those who don't have goldfish yet, I certainly recommend doing this before getting the fish! :)

Now, here's how it went!

CYCLING PROGRESS (February 2021)

2/3/2021 (dosed ammonia) - Ammonia 4 PPM

2/5/2021 - Ammonia 4 PPM

2/6/2021 - Ammonia 4 PPM

  • On this day, I added used filter media from someone's mature tank whom I met on r/AquaSwap!

2/10/2021 - Ammonia 4 PPM

  • Maybe added too much ammonia? Partial water change to 3 PPM

2/15/2021 - Ammonia 3 PPM

2/21/2021 - Ammonia 2 PPM (Finally, an ammonia drop!)

2/22/2021 - Ammonia 3 PPM ~ Nitrites 0 PPM ~ Nitrates 5.0 PPM

  • Midnight of the 22nd, had dosed bottle of Tetra Safestart+, which had raised ammonia back to 3
  • Finally, nitrates! But no nitrites??

2/25/2021 - Ammonia 2 PPM ~ Nitrites 0.5 PPM ~ Nitrates 40 PPM

2/26/2021 - Not much change; added aquarium heater, raised temp to 80 F

2/27/2021 - Ammonia 0.50 PPM ~ Nitrites 1.0 PPM ~ Nitrates 80 PPM

2/28/2021 - Dosed 2 PPM ammonia

CYCLING PROGRESS -CONT- (March 2021)

3/1/2021 - Ammonia 0 PPM ~ Nitrites 5.0 PPM ~ Nitrates 160 PPM

  • Dosed 1 PPM Ammonia post-test

3/2/2021 - 80% water change >> Ammonia 0 PPM ~ Nitrites 0.25 PPM ~ Nitrate - 20 PPM

3/3/2021 - Dosed 2 PPM Ammonia

3/4/2021 - Ammonia 0 PPM ~ Nitrites 5 PPM

  • Dosed 2 PPM Ammonia post-test

(From the 6th to the 12th of the month, I dosed 2 PPM ammonia every day to every other day to keep feeding the ammonia-converting bacteria while nitrite remained 5 PPM and higher. At this point, Nitrite was at its spike and ammonia was going from 2 PPM to 0 within just 10-12 hours! Was now just waiting for nitrites to drop)

3/12/2021 - Nirtite 5+ PPM

  • Skipped dosing ammonia

3/13/2021 - Ammonia 0 - Nitrite 0

  • WOOT!!
  • Dosed 3 PPM ammonia post-test

3/14/2021 - Ammonia 0 - Nitrite 5.0

  • Dosed just 2 PPM ammonia post-test

3/15/2021 - Ammonia 0 - Nitrite 0

After the test on the 15th, I did a huge 90% water change to get rid of the massive amount of nitrates I know had built up. After which I added my duo! https://www.reddit.com/r/Goldfish/comments/m6h9u6/its_finally_time/

I hope those who are new to cycling can learn something from reading my log here! Fishless cycling takes a lot of time and patience, but is the most humane method and a lot less maintenance-heavy since you don't have to worry about frequent water changes until the end. It's also great to be able to have control over how much ammonia is present and how soon it can appear! I also learned heating the water to 80% really speeds things up since bacteria multiplies fastest in warm conditions. In total, I think this cycle took about a month and a half and I learned a lot along the way :)

Happy cycling and thank you for reading!

Sump for goldfish?

Posted: 17 Mar 2021 03:15 PM PDT

I'm building a sump because I've had two cannister filters break on me and I'm sick of em.

My tank is 150G. I have 3 goldfish but eventually want to stock about 6-8. The largest tank that would fit in the cabinet (because of some crappily placed braces) is a 29g.

I plan on putting a sand filter after the sump return, but before it reaches the tank.

My questions:

What is the recommended GPH keeping in mind I will only be able to utilize 23G of the sump tank?

Also, will this be enough filtration, or should I add additional steps?

Should I just place the sump outside the cabinet so that I can use a higher gallon tank for it? (Is a 29g sump not worth the effort?)

Thank you so much for any replies! This is my first sump, so I don't fully know what I'm doing!

Does anyone know what this black streak on his fin is? We’ve been struggling with high ammonia. Could this be an ammonia burn?

Is karen pregnant?

Posted: 17 Mar 2021 10:25 AM PDT

Had this fish in quarantine for 2 weeks. To be honestly I don't know if it's a male or female but it's name is karen and I have one fish who keeps chasing karen (looks like mating behavior) but I'm not sure if its just because she is new to the tank.
