Tank Collapse!

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:27 PM PDT

Our two orandas died recently. Since the tank was cycled, I added 1ppm ammonia a day later so as to not lose the nitrifying bacteria.

That caused a crazy spike in alkalinity. Ph of well over 9+ and no ammonia being converted to nitrite or nitrate. I assume the extreme alkakine environment nuked the nitrifying bacteria?

At any rate one nerite snail made it through all that. My question is it safe to fishless cycle tank w/ ammonia without killing the snail? Plan to try again with goldfish when I can.

Can anyone help me With knowing what's going on with my fancy gold fish? He had lost this eye before and it has since grown back. He's like 4 years old. He's in a 55 gallon tank with 6 albino Cory cats.

Facial Tissue

Hi, does anybody know what might have be causing this? It seems to come and go, although it doesn't seem to bother him. He shares the tank with one other and they regularly bump up against each other - the other fish does not have it so it doesn't seem infectious.

Posted on a facebook group and now I'm confused. Is this just a fantail? Something else? It was sold to me as an oranda but now I'm second guessing.

Substrate replacement advice?

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 12:19 PM PDT

Hey folks, it's long past time I replaced the sand in my tank and I wanted to get a few opinions before I went ahead with it.

After looking up all the steps, these are my questions:

1) Besides the 10g going into the temp tank, how much of the original water should I save? It's fairly murky so I'd like to replace it but at the same time I want to preserve as much of the cycle as I can.

2) Most of what I looked at says to keep the filter running; does this mean hook it up to the temp tank? Mine hangs on the back of the tank so that's not an issue, but it seems to be implied that you run it in the original while you replace the substrate?

3) Mixed messages on this one, do I leave some of the original sand and mix it with the new sand or not? From what I can gather it's a bacteria thing, so I'd like to preserve it as much as possible.

4) How soon after returning them to the main tank can I feed my fish? They deserve treats for putting up with all this lmao

Thanks for reading all that, hope y'all have some answers.
