Just took an axolotl on emergency

Hi guys, I am not new to aquarium pets but have only had fish (clown loaches in a 100gal tank) and shrimp (nano tanks). I was contacted to take on an axolotl that was in a tiny, unsuitable aquarium and was going to be pond released. I went and got it but don't have a tank cycled for it as it was such short notice. I put it in a 10 gal tub with clean aquarium sand I had on hand. I'm cycling a tank now but am wondering if anyone can recommend how much/frequency of water changes I should do on the temporary tub until the permanent tank is ready. Any other advice is also welcome (I'm familiar with the most basic axolotl husbandry). Thank you!

Critique while we have time to change things. The base size of this is quite large. When told that you need 30-40 gallon tank, you aren't filling that completely with water.Right? So is it a square footage thing? Sharpie for size reference. The last pic is where it will go, bottom shelf.

my baby axolotl won't eat :(

Posted: 13 Mar 2021 05:18 AM PST

i just moved my baby axolotl into a big tank, he (or she) is about 4 months old and around 2.5 inches long; maybe 3" (its very hard to measure). he has been in the new tank for about 16 hours but he hasnt eaten since yesterday morning (over 24 hours ago) and im quite worried. i have tried to feed him bloodworms but he refused to open his mouth. how long can he go without food before he will starve?? im a first time axolotl owner and i'm worried about him :(((

Bubble? (First pic) Best way to treat it? Please tell me anything wrong with them. I'm here to learn. They are about 8 months old. Please see my recent post for backstory.

Is there anything I can do to help his gills grow a little fluffier or bigger? Sorry for the bad quality, my phone camera sucks.

How to keep my tank healthy/cycled until my axie arrives?

Posted: 12 Mar 2021 11:27 PM PST

All of you were so helpful when I asked about substrates last week, so thank you! I'm back with another question.

I have my tank nearly cycled, started with Dr Tim's, been checking it daily, etc. Sadly my axie won't arrive until April. So my question is: What do I need to do to keep the tank healthy and ready for him/her? Without an axolotl generating waste my assumption is the good bacteria will starve and die. Do I need to continue to add small amounts of Dr. Tim's to give them ammonium chloride to eat? Should I get a couple of small fish to produce waste in the mean time? Not a huge fan of that because I don't want to effectively sacrifice small fish to keep the tank ready, but I'd do it if it was the best way to keep the biome healthy.

Any suggestions folks might have to keep the tank ready for an extended period of time would be super helpful!
