Gill fungus? How do we treat this? She’s had a bit before and it just floated off but i’ve never seen so much. Our water parameters and every other aspect of her behavior is normal. Any ideas?

What types of plants work best in axolotl tanks?

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 11:29 AM PDT

I've tried several different plants but nothing seems to last more than a few months. I love planted tanks so any recommendations on how to get there would be really helpful.

Looking for advice on keeping nitrates down! I have an established 40 gallon for 2 lotls, two sponge filters, a HOB, lots of live plants, clean waste and old food daily, weekly water changes, and my nitrates are still always crazy high...

Tank levels not decreasing with water changes

Hi all! We have been cycling our tank for about a month now (fishless), and I think we are fully cycled. The only problem is we can't seem to get the nitrites and nitrates down. The nitrites are super high because we accidentally added way too much ammonia at the beginning of the cycle. The ammonia was well above 8ppm for a week or two before it metabolized. You can see the nitrate is very high as well, so the nitrite is metabolizing as well, its just too high from when we added too much ammonia. We did a 50% water change yesterday and the levels are still SO high. I've been adding a few drops of ammonia every day to prevent a cycle crash, but my husband thinks we should stop adding ammonia until the nitrite goes down. Any other suggestions for decreasing nitrite/nitrate? should we do a larger water change? I'd really like to get squirt into his new home.

How do you keep sand in an axolotl tank from getting absolutely filthy?

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:07 AM PDT

I've had a golden albino named Egg Yolk for around 8 months now, and she's doing great. However, I have been struggling with substrate. She's been on large, flat stones for 4 months now, but before that, I had tried to do fine grain sand (caribsea supernaturals in the color moonlight, super fine and smooth grains) and I really enjoyed the look of it. But, it was so hard to keep clean! It got full of brown diatom algae all the time, and when I finally decided to take it out of the tank, I noticed it smelled pretty bad. Usually my solution for keeping substrate clean would be snails/shrimp, but I'm afraid Egg Yolk will choke on the shells when she tries to eat them. Has anyone had success in keeping their axolotl in a sand-substrate tank? How did you keep the sand clean?

Can I clean my water with cheese cloth? I'm not crazy, (well not much) I'll explain

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:43 AM PDT

So vinnies tank leaked n it was half empty by the time we noticed! I managed to get him into his old tank with plenty of the old water! I also managed to save a bucket of the old water which as its already cycled will go well in his new tank! My problem/question is can I run the water in the bucket through something like cheesecloth to get rid of the old small bits of waste n dirt in it? I have his net but the holes are too big for it all so I just wondered what else I could try that would leave the water safe still for my axolotl? Any help welcome please ☺

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 08:44 PM PDT

i'm thinking about getting an axolotl and so far everything i'm capable of doing besides keeping it's tank temperature down. I live in North Carolina and it gets pretty hot here my house stays at around 75 fahrenheit on average. i was wondering what some ways to cool its tank would be?
