Need advice with my koi who apparently hates being cold! Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:53 AM PST This is a weird situation for me, please bear with my long text lol I've kept goldfishes in my pond for years but last summer was the first time I got a big enough space to add a few kois. Where I live it gets too cold to keep a pond open during the winter unless it's very deep, so in the winter I put them in a large container (actually an overturned fridge with a heater on top lol) to spend the cold months in dormance from November to April. Been doing that for years, no loss no problems at all. Yesterday I went on my daily check and one of the kois was on his side, not moving. I removed him and brough him inside and I thought he wouldn't make it, I almost euthanized him! As the water warmed he woke up and now acting normally. I checked it all over, he seems perfectly healthy other than the almost dead in cold water part. I should add he's a young fish, got him as a juvenile last summer. It's his first winter. Now the problem part. What do I do? I don't think he should go back in the 'fridge' with his pals. But I don't have many other options. Right now he's in a 30ish gallons plastic tub with a sponge filter and that's that. I figure once he's warm enough to start eating it's gonna get messy real quick. The pond is still under 10 inches of snow/ice, I should be able to open it in a few weeks if the weather keeps. ANY advice appreciated!!
