- Pro tip: If you need to carry fish in a backpack, put the bag in a PVC pipe, over reusable bags as supportive cushions.

Progress Update On Using Real Skulls for Decoration Posted: 16 Mar 2021 07:19 AM PDT I wanted to provide an update on my project to add real skulls to my new tank. The tank is located in the same room as my bone collection (over 50 species) so I wanted to tie the tank into it. I'm not including pics in this update because I realize not everyone has the same interests as me and I wouldn't want to disturb anyone. If you want pics I can add them later. I will definitely be doing pics of the final product! I'm really enjoy the process so far! I decided to go with damaged skulls and they are working out well. The missing bone allowed me to access inside the cranium to clean, remove the turbinates, and eventually coat it with the superglue(cyanoacrylate). Aesthetically I think they will be awesome with the plants growing through them. I soaked them to loosen the glue holding the teeth in (skulls are typically sold with the teeth glued in). The glue is usually white and often an E6000 type. There was a surprising amount of tissue remaining under the teeth which I removed. I boiled the skulls to sterilize them and that loosened some glue gun glue. The first time I left the teeth lose and it was a little tricky keeping track of them. Later I used a filter bag to keep them safe. If you don't play with teeth often I highly suggest several bags marked with where each small section of teeth go! I re-glued the teeth with the SG. I may have lost one, or I didn't notice it missing before. It was a small one so no worries! The 3rd skull(coyote)I'm using wasn't as damaged as the first two(badger). I drilled some small holes to help break it where I wanted it to and used a Dremel to cut even more away(much quicker!). I used a respirator that my husband uses while painting cars so that I didn't inhale any of the bone dust. I was able to create access to the inside of the cranium and to remove the turbinates. I'm going to coat most of it with SG, but there were a couple small sections I couldn't open up or remove w/o creating major structural insecurity. They are located underneath and somewhat up into the cranium so I'm going to use silicone for those. They won't be visible anyway. I hope to have them tank ready today or tomorrow! Unlike my driftwood which may be soaking long after I'm dead! ETA - here are some pics I took along the way https://imgur.com/gallery/5XM4dBp Update- I'm now going to coat with Zoopoxy polygem 1618. Since the shipping was as much as the resin I hope it arrives quickly! [link] [comments] | ||
