PSA: Don't be a murderer. Please quarantine new plants, for your shrimps' sake.

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:23 PM PST

I murdered my entire colony of 50+ cherries because I didn't quarantine new plants. Usually I only get plants from sellers who keep the plants with shrimp, so that I know they are shrimp-safe but...this one time, I didn't (the seller is one who uses various suppliers, some of which may/may not use pesticides). I soaked the plants overnight, thought that would be enough and put them in the tank.

Within minutes, the shrimp were basically having seizures - these weird, really disturbing jerky fits in the water, then sloooowly falling to the substrate, motionless - not dead, but temporarily paralyzed. Every few minutes they would recover, go back to shrimpy duties, and then repeat the seizures and paralysis. After some frantic googling, turns out pesticides are nerve agents and cause exactly these symptoms in shrimp, and the mortality rate is over 90% even if you catch it immediately. The fish were totally fine the entire time, no signs of stress at all - apparently the pesticide levels would have to be much higher to harm fish, but of course shrimp are very delicate.

I'd removed the offending plants immediately, did a 75% water change, double-dosed on Prime, put in activated carbon to absorb the pesticides, and then poly filter and Purigen...nothing helped, the damage was done. I lost half the shrimp within hours, lost 100% within days - the frequency of the symptoms subsided over time with daily 30% water changes, but still occurred, and the survivors would still have seizures and paralysis, and couldn't swim smoothly - they'd have like split seconds of paralysis even just swimming across the tank, so they would swim a few inches, freeze momentarily and start sinking, then recover and start swimming again a second later, etc. It seems to even soak into the substrate, because I tried to add new shrimp after three weeks, thinking the pesticides would surely be gone by then...the shrimp acted fine during drip, were fine in the tank for a good while, and then after several hours even they had the same symptoms of seizures and paralysis - all of those shrimp were dead within four days. I have Flourite, and I supposed the porous nature of it that allows it to absorb fertilizer also means it absorbs pesiticides...so I have no idea how long my tank will be unsafe for shrimp, but it lasts at least a month after mere minutes of exposure to pesticides. Please quarantine your plants, guys.

Shrimp dying, need help.

Posted: 10 Nov 2020 12:40 AM PST

Hello all.

I have recently started keeping shrimp in a small aquarium.

I have 19 cherry shrimp and 5 small guppies.

This morning I went to feed the crew and found one shrimp, male, laid on its side on the floor - it wasn't totally gone as it was kicking its hind swimmerets. I've taken him out just in case he does die so that it doesn't release nitrate into the water (he's in a bowl with food right now)

The rest of the shrimp seem fine. One even moulted yesterday.

What happening to my boy?!

I followed every bit of advice, the water temp is 26 deg cel, and there's plenty of food :(

Edit: it was a new shrimp introduced yesterday, He acclimatised before going in!

Any ideas?

Is there a minimum size to keep shrimp in?

I have an old 2.5 gallon tank that I'm not currently using and was wondering if it was big enough for shrimp and some plants. Thanks!

Neos dying: Shrimp fit and/or Aqueon shrimp essentials?

Posted: 10 Nov 2020 12:56 AM PST

I am a newbie aquarium owner but pretty good about doing all my research etc. I have a mixed small fish and shrimp 10 gal. planted tank, about 2.5 months old now and cycled with good water parameters. The fish and ghost shrimp are doing fine but the neon yellows i started adding 4-5 per week after the first month and I seem to lose 1-2 out of each batch. Out of 21 purchased total I have lost 7 so down to 14 overall. From Petco so I know they're not that healthy to begin with, they basically said it's to be expected. But it's sad to find a dead shrimp every few days. Wondering if there's anything to be done? I just started adding VitaChem to my fish food and Aqueon Shrimp Essentials to the water in case there's a mineral problem, also ordered some Shrimp Fit to boost immunity. Have read good things about Shrimp Fit increasing survival rate but don't see much here about the Aqueon Shrimp Essentials. Do people here use it? If I use Shrimp Fit would that be enough minerals that I won't need to keep using the Aqueon Shrimp Essentials (it's cheap but a tiny bottle)? I worry about going overboard and doing too much.

Speaking of, I thought about getting BacterAE and/or Shrimp Baby (in case I start getting shrimplets soon) but again I'm worried about doing too much. I read that an established tank should have enough biofilm for babies and I don't want to over pollute the tank with stuff, since the Shrimp Fit is also a powder that the babies can eat too?

FYI I also thought I was maybe over feeding cause my fish were getting fat so I've now reduced. I now feed a pinch of ground up Omega One color pellets with a couple drops of VitaChem in the morning, and a pinch of ground Bug Bites color flakes in the evening. I also just made my first batch of homemade gelatin fish food ice cubes with veggies and salmon skin and started subbing that in (like a sliver) for some meals and everyone seems to like it. And frozen brine shrimp (like 1/4 cube) as a weekly treat. All of the food I mix in a dedicated mortar and pestle with aquarium water and use a dedicated turkey baster to spread all around the tank. The fish go crazy and so do the 3 ghost shrimp when I spray the food around, but the neos I pretty much only see come out at night to graze on leaves and substrate... Any thoughts on any of this is welcome! Thanks!
