In the morning there’s always these little trails through the condensation on my jar — what causes it?

Getting new root growth with the rotala and AR. Don't have high hopes for the ambulia (about a week; closed)

I wish I had taken prgress pictures of this jar. I built it early this year (2020) and it is absolutely teaming with life.

Where is the best place to acquire jars? Any pointers for the new guy?

I could see vases being a solid option, but I am interested in opinions from folks that have already gotten into this.

I am sorry if there is a sticky I missed. I really appreciate this sub!

How do I go about making a jarrarium (preferably sealed/no maintenance) in Canada?

Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:45 AM PST

What would I need to buy in order to make this happen, I'd like it to be sealed and require no maintenance or changing of water. sealed. Would be cool to have a few snails or little shrimp in there

How long does a led lamp need to be on a jar? Does it need to be a day/night cycle?

Vertical wigglies?

Posted: 10 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST

It's typical, isn't it? I've seen a number of posts on here showing those weird vertical worms things dancing away, but as soon as I look for them I can't find them anywhere.

Anyway I've spotted a few in my set-up and would like to know more about them. They're the cream coloured things that seem to have one end stuck in the substrate and wiggle in a vertical position. Anyone know what they called, please?

Best inverts for tiny closed jar?

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 07:02 PM PST

I have been messing around over the past year or so with some 50ml patron bottles with plants. I've used snails as inhabitants with mixed success. Sometimes they reproduce, sometimes they die out.

So I'm wondering if there is a more suitable invert for this environment. I want something that can live and breed in a small closed environment, but big enough to see with a naked eye. Like the size of a small ant or up to a grain of rice.

Options are daphnia, ostercod / seed shrimp, scuds, copepods. I would breed them in an existing larger open planted jar or, if necessary, a 10 gallon tank. If I get tons of excess, I would like to maybe feed them to my fish, but I'm not really interested in mass producing anything.

Taking close up photos inside jars

Posted: 09 Nov 2020 07:15 PM PST

I have a 5 gal shrimp jar, and I want to take photos of the shrimps inside. An issue I've run into is finding a good way to position my camera so that the curvature of the jar doesn't distort my images too much, especially at angles not flush with the jar face. Does anyone have any tips on taking close up photos in jars? I have an iPhone 8 with a wide angle and zoom lens.
