Looking for Reccomendations

Posted: 17 Nov 2020 08:47 PM PST

Hi all, sorry if this has been asked before, I did a little digging and couldn't find an answer. We recently got a kitten, and she has now discovered that she can jump on top of my 75 gallon fish tank. Altough the tank is fully covered, I am still nervous that she'll get her little paws in the spaces where I have cords/filter tubing coming out of the top of my tank.

I was planning on picking up some double sided tape ASAP and placing some strips down on top of the tank. I've also been spending a lot of time watching the tank to stop the behavior before it happens, however I am gone a good portion of the day and no one else in my house bothers to watch the tank.

Does anyone have any reccomendations other than double sided tape? I am willing to try pretty much anything to protect my scaley puppies. Thanks in advance!

My brothers fish constantly does this until it sees us and shoots to the top? Is it anything I should be worried about or is he just being a weirdo?

Routine Aquarium Salt Use?

Posted: 17 Nov 2020 11:12 AM PST

I've read differing things while researching aquarium salt. Some sites say it's really only needed if the fish are sick, others say it's a good thing for the fish like a "multi-vitamin", and then I've heard it isn't the best for fancy goldfish at all.

What has been your experience with aquarium salt? Do you use it with your fancies, and if so, how often? Have you seen any sign that it's beneficial?

Angry at my goldfish!

Posted: 17 Nov 2020 10:55 AM PST

I have to vent!

My female shubunkin was being bullied/chased by my other 2 boys, I ended up seeing a piece of her tail missing and decided to move her into the small tank withe her 4 month old babies so she could rest. While in there she ate all my duckweed which I was struggling to find, annoying but whatever. I came home tonight and she ate #4 of her babies, these babies were not small, 2cm or more. I didn't think she could even get close to fitting them in her mouth let alone eat them otherwise I wouldn't have put her in. I only have 2 babies left, I was only ever going to keep 1 of them for the main tank but it would of been nice to choose. She ate my favorite one.

I immediately put he back into the main tank and the boys started chasing her straight away but I don't care. I know they'll breed again but I'm just bummed.

End rant.

Sudden red streaks on fins + wound on underside.

Posted: 17 Nov 2020 03:48 AM PST

Hi all. My 15 year old common was absolutely fine when being fed this morning. I came back after an appointment three hours later to find bloody streaks on her dorsal fin, and an open wound on her belly. I couldn't get a good photo of the underside but I did the best I could here and here. I immediately placed her in a quarantine tank with some aquarium salt and Interpet Anti internal bacteria. I live in the UK so our choice of fish medicine is quite limited. She is perfectly active and behaving normally and there are no other physical issues I can see other than the blood. My other goldfish is also displaying no symptoms. My tank parameters as of this morning are: ammonia 0ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 4ppm. I have done a 50% water change on the main tank just to be sure. This fish has been quite prone to illness in recent years, and tends to get sick when her tankmates are perfectly healthy. I've never seen anything like this manifest so suddenly, could anyone please give any insight or advice. Thank you!

I was wondering...

...how long does it usually takes for the red streaks to heal? I was this question somewhere and I cannot stop thinking about it.
