Button's progress! After a bump in the road - see previous post - this little one is feeling herself again. The dead caudal fin tissue has fallen off and she's regrowing nicely from the tail base. Same with her anal fins but those are harder to see. Yay Button!

This is my pearl scale. She has swim bladder disease and spends most of the day laying on her belly and struggles to swim to the surface. Any tips?

Invisible Goldfish

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 08:22 AM PST

In August I got a tank from goodwill that came with a black vinyl background. Put black sand in for The Aesthetic. Fast forward to last week. Got a black ranchu, put him in quarantine to give him some medicines, just in case.

This morning I put him in the big tank and he is TOTALLY INVISIBLE 👏🏻😂 Should've seen that one coming.

Is this dropsy? My fish has been acting lethargic after a water change and he tends to sink down at the same time every day around 3. By next morning he’s swimming around normally and eating like usual. I’m really confused if it’s just stressed out or something I should worry about.

Tank Transformation Advice/pointers

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 03:57 PM PST

Hello! Brand new to this sub so apologies if this has been asked a ton already!

So I currently own three little goldfish and all summer they have been living in my big ole rain barrel all summer (they eat the mosquitos and make for lovely garden companions). But I live in Germany and the winters get COLD (we talking minus' Celsius degrees) so am planning on moving them inside this weekend. I have a massive fish tank a neighbour gave me and I want to make sure I make it really lovely and fun for them.

So for the actual question: what are some cool deco ideas - like I said the tank is huge so I have a great opportunity to transform it (perhaps I'll post some before and after photos!) Perhaps there are photos/threads anyone knows about with some groovy deco ideas to inspire me!

Also, what plants/materials etc should I avoid/deffs not use (if there are any!). Do I need a water filter? If not, does that make for very regular cleaning?

I had fish years and years ago as a child but my parents took on most of the responsibility at the time! Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and possibly help out!!!

Tank Disaster, Any Idea What Happened?

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 09:40 PM PST

Hey friends, unfortunately I had a crisis in my tank and lost three goldfish in a single day. I'm not a rookie fishkeeper - I've kept many kinds of fish and many various tanks over the years, never saltwater, though I've done blackwater, brackish, and have even successfully kept more demanding or oddball species. I wouldn't call myself an expert either, and admittedly this goldfish tank is the first I've done in quite some time.

Here's what happened.

The tank is a 30-gallon, about four months old, and had a population of 4 fancy goldfish (2 ranchus, a bubble-eye, and an oranda), all of them smaller than 2". I had a larger empty tank set-up that I would transfer them to after they had grown some.

Things were going well. Then, last week I noticed a sharp ammonia spike, and quickly did a 60% water change. The fish seemed okay, and I kept doing water changes every two days for a week, because the ammonia was seeming to accumulate much faster than it had the past three months. I reduced feeding a touch, just in case.

2 days ago, I noticed a grouping of white dots on both the ranchus. I assumed it was ich, and bought some medication, NOX-ICH (0.50% sodium chloride, 0.05% malachite green). Admittedly I haven't had to use malachite green yet, but the dosage said 1 drop per gallon of water, use for 3 consecutive days. I removed the carbon from the filter, added in 30 drops, and it tinted the water quite green. This was concerning, but I also know malachite green is used for dyes and is notoriously strong.

Next day, a lot of the green had dissipated, and the visible ich on the goldfish seemed to be fading. In the evening I added perhaps 20 more drops.

Within four hours after that, 3 of the 4 goldfish were dead, and all of them were covered in a white film and looking bad. I've seen some fish with their slime coat damaged, and it looked similar, or perhaps a fungal infection.

I feel terrible. The obvious culprit would be the malachite green, but in my research I didn't see it flagged as exceptionally toxic to fish.

Anyone have any idea what happened? I just don't want to repeat this mistake.

EDIT: I did run tests for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, ph - nothing out of the ordinary. 0 on nitries and nitrates, 1-2 ppm ammonia.

How often and how much do you water change?

Dechlor Aquasafe

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 08:14 PM PST

Recently separated a fish from my tank and he left the water very dirty. Can I add dechlor into tap water in a bucket and then pour into my tank or should I remove my fish before pouring in the bucket? Just trying to be safe.

Small Goldfish got sand stuck in her throat

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 10:09 AM PST

Just kind of an anecdote and wondering if anyone else has seen something like this.

My new pet store acquisition (Button) was doing amazingly for the first week - she went from lethargic bottom sitting to eating well and swimming around in like a day. Her rotted fins are healing nicely and she was showing no other signs of problems. Until she suddenly stopped being able to eat in week 2. She wanted to, she'd take the Repashy piece, try to chew, then violently spit it out and do this weird very rapid chewing motion. And then leave the food to disintegrate. She did this for maybe 4 days. I took her out and checked for a blockage but couldn't see anything. And I knew she was entirely empty/fasted because her poop was clear/hair like. And her energy level plummeted again and she started corner sitting again. She does have a weirdly pronounces "Adams apple" so I was wondering if it was some deformity making an appearance after her mini growth spurt. I told my hubby I'd leave her maybe a few more days but if she was still unable to eat I would think about euthanasia.

I then did a water change, and I noticed something odd. A grain of white sand at the bottom of the tank. When I first set the quarantine tank up, I used the bucket I used when i washed my sand for my main tank. It was clean but there were a couple of stubborn grains of sand (white Estes stony river) that made it into the tank. We're talking maybe 10 grains. But I removed them all over the first couple of water changes. And I was 100% positive I got them all because they were bugging me. But one was back - how?! I put it down to it being stuck somewhere.

Coincidentally (I didn't make the connection between finding the sand grains and this initially) Button started being able to take VERY small amounts of food again. If I fed her one tiny piece she could manage it. Two tiny pieces and she'd spit them out and do the rapid chewing thing. So feedings took a long time haha. But her energy levels have improved and she's swimming around and pooping normally again. Phew.

This morning.. two more grains of sand in the tank. Now I know for SURE they weren't there last night. So.. I'm thinking poor Button who has never been kept on sand and has never foraged, got several grains stuck in her throat/teeth. She's the size of a quarter still so they probably would have been enough to stop her eating. The poor little nugget :/ has anyone else experienced this with small goldfish and sand? I'm concerned about her eventual move into the main tank in case this happens again. (Though by the slow progress of her fins healing it'll be weeks yet so she does have some time to grow).

Anyway that's all - I like to write these things out in case anyone else finds it useful or it shows up in a Google search and makes a lightbulb go off above someones head haha. I actually have another one re: high pH that I'll post soon.

Topping off an aquarium

Can I top off an aquarium with tap water or should I still use dechlor? Removed about a gallon or two of water to separate a fish and it's very dirty.

Cleaning new tank decorations.

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 06:14 AM PST

I have a established tank and I would like to add two decorations I got from a pet store. They are aquarium safe. How do I properly sanitise them before adding to the tank? I am getting a lot of mixed messages.

I have heard to use bleach but I am uncomfortable with this.

NEES ADVISE NOT SURE WHAT TO DO

Posted: 05 Nov 2020 09:54 AM PST

So I am setting up a tank with live plants for the first time and want to salt the tank for maintenance every month. Will this hurt my plants? They are just two small coontail plants. It's a 37gal tank.
