| My one year journey with Goldfish! Posted: 02 Nov 2020 05:38 AM PST Phase One: Ignorance Last November was my son's 7th birthday, on which we promised him to adopt a cat. We went to a local pet store chain to get the needed supplies before adopting the cat. But during our visit, he saw the goldfish and decided that he wanted a goldfish instead. My partner and I thought that a goldfish would be much less maintenance and cheaper so we agreed. Neither of us had any previous experience with aquariums. The employee advised us to get a tiny 3-gallon tank, a filter, and some gravel and told us to change some of the water every other week. My son named the goldfish Tiger because it has orange and black spots on its body. Tiger looked fine for the first month or so, however by mid-December he looked sick and depressed. Spending most of his time at the bottom of the tank. Phase Two: Familiarity I started researching more and more on how to nurture Tiger back to health. My whole family fell in love with him in these two months so losing him wasn't an option. At this point, I learned Tiger was a Comet Goldfish. Most resources online advised me to get a 75-gallon tank, but that was impossible to fit in our apartment. We settled on a 20 gallon long which is about half the length of a 75 gallon. Next, we removed the gravel and replaced it with black sand, got a thermometer and a water testing kit. After placing Tiger in his new aquarium he started swimming all over the place and seemed quite happy. Seeing him darting all over the tank after spending the previous two days being lethargic at the bottom brought a tear to my eye. 10 months later and here we are on the first anniversary. Tiger is happy and healthy. He swims all day long and picks at the sand for fun. I feed him a variety of foods and vegetables. Weekly water tests, and a 24 hr ammonia monitor. Phase Three: Enlightenment A while ago I discovered this subreddit and the world of planted goldfish tanks. I'm now planning on moving Tiger to a bigger 30-gallon aquarium and fill some of that new space with goldfish tolerant plants and a couple of small rocks to prevent uprooting. I hope the plants would make for more stable water parameters so Tiger stays healthy. Don't worry I'll make sure he has plenty of uninterrupted swimming space. If I see he isn't acting like his usual self, I'll remove the plants and rocks. I just wanted to share my experience and newly found love for these fantastic creatures. [link] [comments] | ||
