What were some things you wish you knew / wish you did differently / things you changed a bit when starting out?

Hello all! Recently subbed and I love reading the posts here. I've a semi-noob and have kept tanks before, but they were 20 and 15 gallon longs, with aquarium soil and low-tech plants I could get locally. I never did things the "proper" way by checking parameters, but only added shrimp and bettas months later when the plants have done their melting and dying and finally stabilized [by eye], and the tank itself would not have any algae or infestations. Now I'm about to start a nano tank in a 4 gallon bowl with just anubias nana petites.

My every first "yolo" tank was a 15 gallon long dirt tank: sifted gardening soil capped with river sand. My mistake was overstocking with plants. It was just packed with only stem plants*.* I had 2 5 watt LED clip on aquarium lights and waited in excitement. I knew nothing going in, and wanted it to be a trial and error run because it sounded fun to me. My only knowledge was that plants needed to be underwater, have soil or some substrate, and lights. Probably not a surprise to those who are reading, but the plants didn't do well and melted. The light wasn't strong enough [?] to reach the bottom and leaves melted and fell off, and after a few days, there was brown stuff on them. I assumed it was the soil that leaked out as I didn't also cap enough sand and the soil settled on the leaves. And snails. So many snails. It was a wild experience. I dismantled the tank after 10 days maybe as it started to smell odd too. Not pungent but smelled of soil soaked water.

So, that was my first "fauxstad" experience. What was your first experience in the nano tank hobby, and as the title says, what were some things you wish you knew / wish you did differently / things you did differently from what was recommended when starting out?
