Posted: 13 Oct 2020 05:26 PM PDT 3 days ago I fed my girl broccoli for the first time. I boiled a piece and put it in the tank. She instantly began eating it! She grazed at it for a little over an hour, and then I turned the lights off for bed. I decided to leave it in there for the night (big mistake) so my two new mystery snails could eat some while my goldfish slept. Well I think she stayed up all night eating it, because there were almost no leaves left on it in the morning. My water smelled a bit funny and all 4 of my filter intakes were full of green poop. She didn't move much for the rest of the day and I noticed that the veins on her tail were very red. I fasted her for the day and fed her lightly the next day. She's almost back to her normal self now and most of the redness on her veins has gone away. I've since done a water change and vacuumed the tank. My question now is, what is the correct way of feeding vegetables? Should I leave it in there for an hour max, and then take it out even if my goldfish is still eating? Did she just get overly excited since this was her first time eating broccoli? I would like to continue feeding her vegetables in the future but I'm hesitant to do so now. Would it be better to get some vegetable rich gel food instead? [link] [comments]
Sick Goldfish! Swim Bladder or Something Else? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 12:55 PM PDT Hey, guys! Firstly, I've been a long time reddit lurker but I never post, so excuse any mistakes. I have had 2 comet goldfish for about 3/4 years now in a 65 gallon tank (admittedly got them in college and had them in a tiny bowl, but I've since upgraded to the large tank 3 years ago after I realized I was a horrible person). Water parameters always right on point (as referenced by a few sites that gauge ideal goldfish water paramaters), weekly cleanings and water changes, filter changes every 2 to 3 weeks or so, addition of aquarium salt and API Stress Zyme after weekly water changes, and water temp always around 68-70 degrees. Three weeks ago one of them got pretty bummed out, just sitting at the bottom of the tank, clamped fins, not really eating. He has no signs of parasites, so I worried it may be bacterial so I treated him with aquarium salt and Melafix(as opposed to heavier antibiotics I've used maybe 2 years ago after a bacterial infection both of them had). He perked up after a day or two of the Melafix, so no problem. I thought... Now, my little guy is having issues again. Here's my issue... Two weeks ago I moved to the UK for a masters program and I've been coaching my father on how to care for them. Three/four days ago he called and told me my goldfish is lethargic again and bottom sitting like before. Today my father called again, and as of today my fish is now flipped onto his side and trying to right himself. He's even wedging himself between the filter to try to stay upright. I had him put in some aquarium salt and watch him while I try and figure out what to do. The other goldfish in the tank is totally fine, but my father mentioned he's becoming distressed by the other goldfish not doing well and has been, in so many words, poking his bottom. I thought for a split second maybe he is actually a she and eggs were involved, but the two goldfish have always been inseperatable in general. If goldfish could have soul mates, these two definitely are each others haha I don't have the current water parameters and I think my father is a little hopeless with that (I know its simple but... fathers), but based on my father's daily fish updates and photos the water is beautifully clean, and he's been following the instructions I've given him to a tee. So, I'm ruling out poor tank parameters for right now. I'm also ruling out any food issues for the time being, as they have been on the same pellets for 4 years now and frequently get fresh veggies from our garden. I did ask my father if he was pooping and he said he did not believe so, but this could also be because the fish has refused to eat for days now. I panic bought both parasite and bacterial treatments and had them sent to my house back in the US, but I'm still trying to figure out what to do. I can't get a clear answer from any websites, so I'm here asking for help. I'm incredibly frustrated that I can't be there to take care of my fish, but based on his past behavior and what my father is telling me there are no outside signs of change. No visible parasites, no bodily damage, nothing. I'm suspect that it could be due to food or water quality. So, basically, could this be parasites or bacteria? What can I do? It seems like typical swim bladder issues, but his previous lethargy and bottom sitting has me concerned. I'm an ocean away from my fish and it sucks, any advice or theories you could give would be wonderful. Currently having my father use aquarium salts, raise the temperature, and is also attempting to give shelled peas. I did not want to try anything else without getting some solid advice first. Thank you guys, and sorry for the block of text I am incredibly distressed lol If something doesn't make sense please let me know. [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Oct 2020 10:27 AM PDT Hey everyone! I made a post recently on my absurdly high nitrates after my cycle was complete. I changed my water (40-30% roughly?) and it lowered to 80ppm from 160. Although when I changed my water my nitrites went up to about 5ppm and have now lowered to 0ppm. I still have super high nitrate levels but I nearly ruined my cycle with a water change. How should I go about this? Should I change less water weekly, bi-weekly? What's the best way to get my nitrates levels down without reverting my cycle process? This has been a real pain of a cycle and as a beginner it's taken maybe 2 months in a 30 gallon. I'm also not sure what I should do with my filter in terms of changing the equipment. I have a fluval v3 (I think I can't remember what number came after the v) and I've seen a lot of people say to just rinse it out rather than change it, which it says on the box. I'm sorry but I'm really not sure what to do and because of work and school I haven't really thought about my tank. Thanks!! [link] [comments]

Difference between Ultum Nature Systems and Lifegard tanks? Posted: 13 Oct 2020 07:29 AM PDT I'm on the hunt to upgrade to a rimless tank with no black back panel, and I've narrowed my search to Lifegard and Ultum, since they are fully rimless, 360 clear glass, and come in larger sizes. Honestly, I can't really tell the difference between the two and if you told me they were made by the same people with different branding, I'd believe you. Why should someone go with one or the other? I'm interested in Ultum because the clear glass top you can buy seems to fit perfectly on their tanks, but surely you can get similar custom options for Lifegard. Can anyone help me understand if there's a hidden difference between the two brands? [link] [comments]
