This is likely one of our last warm days, so I took this to keep me sane over winter.

Got Kanaplex... now what? (Dropsy)

Posted: 30 Sep 2020 07:59 PM PDT

Hi everyone! Thank you to everyone who's given me great advice these last few day's. I got my goldfish set up in an isolation tank to treat suspected bacterial infection and dropsy. I removed the carbon filter from the HOB and added a sponge filter and an extra air stone. Did a EPSOM salt dip at 1 teaspoon per gallon for 10 mins. Is this the right dosage? I'm seeing so much conflicting information. Some people say 1 tablespoon per gallon others say 1 teaspoon. She had her first dose of Kanaplex last night poured directly into the tank. Should I still do daily water changes with Kanaplex? Should I try putting a dose inside gel food? I also picked up some garlic as I heard it was good for parasites. Sorry for all the questions but I live in Canada where you need to buy this medication from the vet at $70 for 1 weeks worth of treatment so I really want to make sure I do everything right! Thanks everyone 🙂

Hello, please help me! I ordered 3 ranchus(from the internet) for my Ranchu Tank and they arrived a few hours ago. The other two where just fine, but it had trouble swimming up, it was just as active as the other ones. Once they where acclimated and they went in the tank she swam around but sank late

Looking to reduce nitrate/nitrite & Seachem Pristine Usage scenarios?

Posted: 30 Sep 2020 02:33 PM PDT

I'd like advice on:
-reducing nitrate/nitrite even further

-reducing or getting rid of brown algae

-when Pristine is useful

I could not find anything concrete substantial on when Pristine would be beneficial and how often to use it, only read that it's suitable for established tanks After testing my water chemistry I found higher levels of nitrate and nitrate that I would like to reduce, so right now for my 40 gal tank I have done a 30% water change with siphoning of the gravel. A week ago all the parameters were fine but I think recently I fed the fish too much and thus more waste was created. My tank is also seeing brown algae growth on the live plants, so I have been cleaning the leaves pretty much every day to scrub the algae off.
Only one oranda goldfish exists in the tank with some amazon sword, jungle val, dwarf grass and a few other live plants. Running with two aerated stones and a 40 gallon filter with carbon inside.

Fish behavior: Nothing changed much, no rapid gill movement, fish seems to be on the ground more but immediately perks up when I go to the tank.
My waters have been:
Nitrate- 20 mg/L

Nitrite- 3.0 mg/L

Hard-150 GH

Chlorine- 0

Alkalinity- 120 KH

pH- 7.4

Why does my lil goldfish act like such a creep to my big gorl

Posted: 30 Sep 2020 02:24 PM PDT

I have 3 goldfish. Nook who is my biggest girl about 4 inches, Meelo who's about 2 inches and Toki 1 inch?

I put Nook and Meelo together in a tank just to see how they would like eachother and Meelo just kept chasing nook around and would not get off her tail Like it didn't look like breeding behavior. Nook would swim away really fast and he would be right behind her. And she was sitting at the bottom of the tank cause he stressed her out and he would just be floating besides her and waiting for her to move so he could follow her. I separated them and nook started acting all happy and normal again but he's in the tank besides hers and he just sits there and surfs the glass where he can see into nooks tank. He shares a tank with Toki and he does not bother him whatsoever. They act like they can't even see eachother. But I'm possibly going to move all 3 of them into a big tank very soon and I'm worried he's going to do that to her again.

My smallest ranchu started pineconing

Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:34 AM PDT

Posting just to vent a little.

I have lost two ranchu in as many months with non-visible symptoms. This young one (named Goose) is hanging on, and I'm doing a salt and maracyn treatment in an isolation tank, since it looks like a swim bladder infection. I don't have a lot of hope, since pineconing is usually a death sentence, but I don't want to lose another fish. I've tried so hard to make sure my fish live their best lives, and losing them is heartbreaking. I'm really hoping this little one recovers.

Switching to Pellets

Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:22 AM PDT

I've kept both of my goldfish on flakes for as long as I've had them. I want to switch my common, Ronald, to pellets because he's shown swim bladder issues in the past. Do you guys have any tips for switching? My biggest issue right now is getting him to notice the pellets, because he goes straight to the surface to look for food.
