Injured Baby Axolotl (Warning Semi-Graphic Picture)

Posted: 19 Oct 2020 07:22 AM PDT

So my girlfriend is taking care of a few axolotl babies because a neighbor had an axolotl couple that was crapping out babies like crazy, and I am pretty sure they were going to throw away the babies or something. Not sure what you do with hundreds of eggs, and I am pretty sure this family didn't either. So we took some babies to try to save them, and this has maybe been 5 months ago now, so they are still pretty young.

Now my girlfriend also tried to save a stray cat, so she has a kitten running around the house, and it has learned how to jump everywhere. You can kind of see where this is going. We have the babies in smaller Tupperware bowls with lids on (not sure if this is super fine for baby axolotls, we were waiting to get a bigger tank when they grew up, and hope to find people to take most of the babies). Anyways the damn cat knocked over the bowl and was able to peel the lid off, and scratched the poor guy a bit. We scared away the cat, but our axolotl got a few nasty cuts. I thought it would be dead by this point, but it has been a couple days.

These pictures are shortly after the attack, and we can see intestines or something hanging outside of the body a bit. Our axolotl is looking better, but I don't see how those intestines magically go back inside on their own, and I am worried this condition will kill it as it grows older.

So I was wondering if anyone can offer some help on how to save this guy, or if this guy will survive without intervention. Or if sadly there is nothing we can do, but hope.

Did I just do serious damage?! Please help, I’m freaking out!

So, my axolotl just jumped out of my hands while I was transferring him during a water change. He fell between a stack of storage bins. And now he looks unwell, and very weird. The most noticeable things are little red specks on his body, and he's looking less pink but with more red gills. Please tell me I didn't just kill him, I feel absolutely sick right now. What should I do?

here are photos. The first two are from last night and the second two are just a few seconds ago

I can't believe this happened...

EDIT: I just dropped a piece of earthworm in and he ate it, if that means something.

Best place to order axolotls online?

I've heard debates about keeping a pair of axolotls together; what's your opinion?

Posted: 19 Oct 2020 03:48 AM PDT

I'm going to be setting up a 40g breeder tank, definitely big enough for a pair. Also, I'm getting my animal/s in person, not online, so I'll be able to see them up close to be sure that they're similar enough in size to one another.

The thing is, I'm not sure if the benefits of a pair outweigh the risks. Are they social enough to bond with one another, or is it a neutral "there's another living thing in my space" kind of thing? Do they enjoy company or just tolerate it?

I'm a pet person-- I have chickens, dogs, and cats, all animals that tend to do better in pairs or social groups. But I also have a ball python, an animal who would suffer immensely if kept with another snake. I just never really learned enough about amphibian brains to understand how social they are!
