Aquatic Koi Koi Lethargic/ Not Eating

Koi Lethargic/ Not Eating

I'm watching my parent's koi in N California and if you're somehow living under a rock- we've had some fires around here! Well, I've watched these koi a few times (and hand dug their pond- we go back a ways. I helped raise a bunch when the first batch of koi spawned, too.) They're usually pretty active but were all hiding yesterday and today.

So, I used the spitter pump to redirect flow out of the pond. Apparently every time the fires get bad this year the fish have gotten weird, likely due to nasty ash dropping in their pond? My dad said to set up a drain and refill system.

Right now I have water from the hose going in and am pulling water from the bottom of the pond. A second pump runs the filtration system. The hose water is not city water but well water and does not have any chlorine/ municipal treatment- straight out of the ground and to the house.

I ran this about four hours yesterday and am on hour three today. Other than changing out the ash- filled pond water to get them some clean water- what can be done?

Not my pond but I really don't want to tell my mom some of her koi died while she was out of town dealing with another death in the family. She loves those koi. I'm worried about them.

Iirc, the pond is about 800-1000 gallons. (Dug it in high school, it's been over a decade.) The pump pulling water out is normally hooked up to a spitter frog statue. Not sure how many gph but it can't be much. The filter is a massive biofilter my dad and I built out of a cattle trough. That's another 75 gallons there.

The koi are still pretty lethargic and aren't their usual selves. Skipped dinner and I skimmed all that out. I really don't want to have to pull one since I hand raised most of the fish in there when they spawned over a decade ago. It's really worrying and I'm not sure how to help them. There's literally ash floating down and covering cars and in the yard. I'm pretty sure that's it. Parents confirmed this happened twice this year in coordination with fires and ash dropping out of the sky.
